Tucked away deep in a Vosges valley, Munster Christmas market escapes the bustle of the plain. You're only 20 kilometres from Colmar here, but in another world: the mountains close off the horizon, the air smells of fir resin, and Place du Marché fills with around thirty wooden chalets fragrant with gingerbread and matured cheese. It goes by the name “Marché de Noël au Cœur des Montagnes” (Christmas Market in the Heart of the Mountains), and the name sums it up: smaller, more intimate, focused on the valley's local produce and the people who make it.
It's a market where you meet producers who live a few kilometres away, where gingerbread storks sit alongside wheels of farmhouse Munster, and where Father Christmas makes less noise than the snow on the roofs of the Hautes Vosges. A good choice if you want a breather between two busier visits.
Munster cheese, king of the valley
You can't visit Munster at Christmas without tasting what made the town's name. AOP Munster comes in every form on the stalls: by the slice, matured right through, flavoured with cumin, or melted into the famous Munster soup served piping hot at the food chalets. The fermes-auberges (farm inns) of the high pastures bring their cheeses down to the square, and the valley's affineurs set up shop for Advent.
Around the cheese, the whole Vosges larder is on show: fir honey, bilberry jams, eaux-de-vie, smoked charcuterie and tourte de la vallée, the golden pastry filled with meat and white wine that you take away still warm. On the sweet side, Alsatian bredele are piled into colourful pyramids, and gingerbread here takes the shape of fir trees, storks and carved figures. For the mulled wine to go with it, we'll point you to a good homemade recipe if you want to keep the mood going once you're home.
A mountain village atmosphere
Munster's strength lies in its setting. Place du Marché opens onto colourful façades and the Protestant church, with the Vosges mountains as a backdrop. When night falls early in December, the warm glow of the garlands and the braziers give the village the feel of a refuge. You stroll without being jostled, stop to chat with the artisans and leave with your hands full.
Children get their big moment: on 6 December, Saint Nicholas abseils down the Protestant church, then hands out manalas (brioche figures) and clementines to the best-behaved. Advent also brings evening gatherings, Christmas concerts and an exhibition of nativity scenes. The aisles are accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs, which helps when you come as a family.
Getting there and planning your visit
Munster Christmas market runs from 20 November to 31 December 2026 on Place du Marché, free to enter. The chalets open in the late morning and close around 7pm or 8pm depending on the day, with shorter hours on 24 and 31 December. Check the programme on the tourist office website before you set off, as the dates of the coming edition are sometimes adjusted.
From Colmar, the Colmar-Munster TER line gets you there in about twenty minutes, dropping you a few steps from the centre: the simplest way to avoid parking. By car, three free car parks await you (Salle des Fêtes, Espace Saint-Grégoire, Médiathèque), and a Christmas shuttle links Colmar at weekends during Advent. Allow a short half-day to take it all in at your own pace, taste and head home loaded up.
Fancy combining it with the area's great classics? Colmar and its illuminated lanes are 20 minutes away, and the medieval village of Kaysersberg rounds off a day in the Haut-Rhin perfectly.
Our tip
Come late afternoon on a weekday if you can: the chalets are open, the lights come on as night falls early, and you get the market without the weekend crowds. Take the TER from Colmar to skip the parking.
