Christmas markets in Austria

Vienna and its dozens of markets, Salzburg beneath its church spires, Innsbruck at the foot of the mountains: Austria lives Advent as a season in its own right. From France, daytime trains via Zurich, Munich or Stuttgart put the country a day’s journey away, with one change along the way.

Christmas traditions

Christkindlmärkte open from mid-November, Krampus and Saint Nicholas on 5 and 6 December, Advent choirs, Punsch mugs with a deposit, nativity scenes and “Silent Night” (“Stille Nacht”), born near Salzburg in 1818.
