Christmas Markets for Couples: A Romantic Guide

Destinations, charming places to stay, fine dining: the ideal itinerary for a weekend for two.

A Christmas market weekend for two can tip into kitsch or into magic depending on the choices you make. Destination, dates, accommodation, extra activities: this guide gathers the right instincts for a romantic break that works, without falling into the trap of packed markets and overpriced hotels.

Choosing the right destination

For a first visit

Colmar is probably the best choice for a first Christmas market weekend as a couple. Six themed markets within a compact pedestrian area, charming places to stay in the old town, and a tourist infrastructure well used to couples. Quieter than Strasbourg at the weekend, with a comparable atmosphere.

For something more intimate

Head for the villages: Kaysersberg, Riquewihr or Eguisheim in Alsace. Small-scale markets, limited accommodation and so fewer tourists competing for it, and a genuine atmosphere. Pair it with a tasting at a winegrower's for a perfect day.

For a gourmet weekend

Reims (Champagne), Beaune (Burgundy), Sarlat (Périgord) or Lyon add a culinary dimension beyond the market itself. Combine a wine tasting, a Michelin-starred dinner and the market. The market becomes one moment among others in a weekend built around good food.

For a spectacular setting

Annecy in winter (the Thiou canal, the lake, the hilltop castle), Provins (a UNESCO-listed medieval town), Honfleur (the old harbour in Normandy). These destinations offer a backdrop that lifts the whole market experience.

Choosing the right dates

The sweet spot: 28 November to 8 December, midweek

The first stalls are open, the lights are up, hotels are not yet full and prices remain reasonable. Ideal for a Tuesday-to-Thursday or Wednesday-to-Friday break if you can take a few days off.

Dates to avoid

  • Weekend of 5-6 December: Alsace at its most crowded, hotels full and expensive
  • Saturdays 12 and 19 December: the classic pre-Christmas peak
  • 23-24 December: a last-minute shopping frenzy, not very romantic

The contrarian option

The markets still open after 25 December (Colmar until the 29th, Paris Tuileries until early January) are strangely calm between Christmas and the 31st. The stalls are still lively and the lights still on, but the visitors have vanished. A rare window for a weekend for two in an almost private atmosphere.

Accommodation that makes the difference

Spa hotels and wellness

Several destinations have a strong spa-hotel offering: La Cour d'Alsace in Obernai, the Yonaguni Spa near Colmar, La Cheneaudière in Colroy-la-Roche, La Closerie in Reims. Expect €250 to €500 a night with spa access included. Book 2 to 3 months ahead.

Guest rooms on a wine estate

Alsace, Champagne and Burgundy offer an especially appealing format: a room on a wine estate, with a tasting at the domaine included. A personal welcome, and prices often gentler than a hotel (€120 to €200 a night with breakfast and tasting).

Boutique hotels in the historic centre

Old half-timbered houses converted into hotels (typically 4 to 12 rooms) have a character that is hard to find elsewhere. In Colmar: Le Maréchal, Le Beauséjour, La Maison des Têtes. In Strasbourg: Régent Petite France, Hôtel des Rohan. In Reims: Domaine Les Crayères for premium budgets.

The ideal two-day itinerary

Friday evening

Arrive mid-afternoon to make the most of the golden winter light. Check in early, then a first mulled wine at the market in the early evening as the lights come on. Dinner at an intimate restaurant booked in advance.

Saturday morning

A leisurely breakfast at the hotel. A quiet stroll through the old town before the tourists arrive (before 11am). A visit to a local museum or a wine cellar if the destination lends itself to it.

Saturday afternoon

Lunch in a winstub or a bistro with a traditional feel. The hotel spa or hammam in the afternoon (allow 2-3 hours to make the most of it). A rest in the middle of the day keeps you from flagging and leaves you fresh for the evening.

Saturday evening

The Christmas market after dark for the illuminations, mulled wine in its different recipes, souvenir shopping. A fine-dining dinner booked in advance (ideally Michelin-starred, or a starred chef's bistro). A nightcap in a wine bar or piano bar to finish.

Sunday

Brunch or a late breakfast. A trip to a nearby village (from Colmar: Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, Eguisheim; from Reims: a visit to a Champagne house; from Annecy: a loop around the lake). Head home in the late afternoon.

Experiences not to miss

Boat trip on the Ill (Strasbourg)

An hour on the illuminated canals of Petite France, glass of mulled wine in hand. €16 per person, with regular departures in December. Book at the tourist office the day before.

Tour of the great trees (Alsace)

Strasbourg (Place Kléber, 30 m), Mulhouse (Place de la Réunion), Colmar (Place de l'Ancienne Douane), Sélestat (home of the original tree of 1521, according to legend). Each great tree has its own personality, which makes for a perfect themed walk.

Cathedral light shows (Reims, Strasbourg)

A free show projected onto the façades. In Reims, 25 minutes several times a night in December. In Strasbourg, the show is shorter but repeated every hour. The ideal end to a romantic evening.

Wine tasting in the cellar

Alsace, Champagne and Burgundy open their cellars all year round, but the winter atmosphere has a charm of its own. Expect €15 to €30 per person for a guided one-hour tasting. Pair it with a few bottles to take home.

Restaurants worth booking

For a gourmet dinner

Always book 4 to 6 weeks ahead for December weekends. A few names by destination:

  • Strasbourg: Au Crocodile, Le Buerehiesel, La Casserole
  • Colmar: JY's, La Maison des Têtes, Aux Trois Poissons
  • Reims: Le Parc des Crayères, La Grande Georgette
  • Beaune: Le Cep, Le Bistrot Bourguignon

For a genuine local atmosphere

Alsatian winstubs (the local take on a bistro, serving regional cooking) are perfect for a romantic dinner without the ceremony. Expect €35 to €60 per person, wine included. In Strasbourg: S'Burjerstuewel, Au Pont Saint-Martin. In Colmar: Wistub Brenner, Wistub de la Petite Venise.
