Christmas in Lapland, home of Santa Claus

A Christmas in Lapland is a family trip out of the ordinary. Santa Claus Village, on the Arctic Circle, is 3 hours 15 to 3 hours 30 minutes by direct flight from London, around 3 hours 40 minutes from Paris, and meeting Santa there is free. That leaves you three decisions: the base (Santa’s home town or the resorts further north), the dates (from late November to March) and the budget, which almost triples from one type of accommodation to the next. The children’s ages matter mostly for the activities, since the village is open to everyone.

2026-2027 season, information checked on 15 October 2026

Planning your Christmas in Lapland

For a Christmas in Lapland, three choices follow one another. The base first, because it sets the flights and the access to Santa. The dates next. The budget last, because it follows from the first two. Rovaniemi is the only one of the five bases with direct flights from three London airports and four French ones, and meeting Santa there is free. Between a Lapland holiday you put together yourself and a package, the price gap weighs most at Christmas: at Nomade Aventure, Christmas and New Year week carries a surcharge of around €1,500 per person.

Meeting Santa Claus in Lapland

Santa’s house, the one that welcomes families, is his office at Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle. It is open every day of the year: no need to aim for 24 December. On peak days in December, the free entry slot is collected on site and can be gone by midday. Come later in the day instead. Outside Rovaniemi, there is no daily meeting as far as we know: in Levi it is sold as an excursion, and in Saariselkä it comes down to a one-day festival on 21 November.

Where to stay in Lapland: five bases compared

“Rovaniemi or Levi”? The room rate gives a first answer. In December 2025, Rovaniemi’s hotels were 93.5% full, at €482 a night on average, against €287 in Levi and €187 in the municipality of Inari, home to Saariselkä. The north, quieter and better placed for the northern lights, therefore costs less than Santa’s home town. So “where to go in Lapland” has two answers: Rovaniemi for a first trip with young children, the north for families who have already met Santa.

Map of Lapland: bases and airports

On a map of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Levi and Saariselkä look like neighbours. In reality, 170 km separate Rovaniemi from Levi, and 260 km, around 3 hours by road, Rovaniemi from Saariselkä. Changing base mid-trip therefore costs hours of driving, or a train ride for Kemi, 1 hour 30 from Rovaniemi on the same line. Each base has its airport at most 25 km away. Rovaniemi’s is closer to Santa Claus Village, 3 km, than to the city centre, 10 km. Kiruna, in Sweden, is reached via Stockholm or Copenhagen.

Best time to visit Lapland, November to March

When to visit Lapland depends on what you are coming for. Snow first: in Sodankylä, the reference point for northern Finland, it reaches 13 cm in mid-November, 33 cm in mid-December and 77 cm in mid-March. Santa next: his office enters high season from mid-November, and December remains the busiest month of the season, the one when a hotel room in Finnish Lapland costs on average half as much again as in November. Daylight last: in Saariselkä the sun does not rise from 6 December to 6 January, in Levi from 12 to 31 December. Rovaniemi, further south, keeps a little daylight.

The best time to go to Lapland with young children often falls outside Christmas week: late November for Santa, when Finnish Lapland records almost three times fewer overnight stays than in December. February or March for deep snow, returning daylight and the northern lights.

Rovaniemi values: daylight on the 15th of the month, average temperatures 1991-2020. Hotel occupancy and prices for Finnish Lapland, 2025-2026 season.

Lapland with kids: what age to go

A family trip to Lapland is possible from birth: Santa Claus Village sets no age limit and Lapland Safaris outings are free up to age 3. The real question is what the child gets out of it. The advised age for a Christmas trip is around 3 or 4, when the child joins in the activities while still believing in Santa. Nomade Aventure sells its holiday from age 4. Two rules then weigh more than age. Below −20°C, Lapland Safaris no longer takes under-2s, and each of its safaris requires two adults, which rules out a parent travelling alone with the children. Snowshoeing and skiing start at 12, except on programmes designed for children.

In bad weather, an operator may turn away a young child. At Lapland Safaris, the child rate runs from age 4 to 14 and each safari requires two adults.

Cost of a Lapland trip for a family of four

The cost of a Lapland trip depends less on the activities than on the accommodation. For two adults and two children aged 8 and 11, four nights in Rovaniemi from 13 to 17 December 2026, a hotel night comes to around €860 on Booking, while an apartment rents for around €330 a night on Airbnb. The flights are the same in all three scenarios: Ryanair from Paris-Beauvais, at €282 to €355 per person return. From London Stansted, the same Ryanair return costs €256 per person from 13 to 17 December, around €1,026 for four if every seat is at that price, and around €102 less than from Beauvais. For the safaris, the Lapland Safaris child rate is worth about three quarters of the adult rate from age 4 to 14, and cold-weather outfits are included, which saves the €79 per person of a four-day hire.

The budget for a family of four therefore almost triples between the most frugal scenario and the glass igloo, for the same flights and the same dates.

By comparison, tour operators’ packages. At Nomade Aventure, the organised stay in Rovaniemi comes to around €14,000 for four over Christmas and New Year week, at the starting price and with no child rate. At Voyageurs du Monde, a tailor-made trip from late December to early January starts at around €15,000. Our scenarios count meals at estimated average prices, and the igloo of the Splurge scenario at Halo Igloos’ direct price.

Lapland temperatures: what to wear

An average is not enough to describe the temperature in Lapland. December shows −7.7°C in Rovaniemi over 1991-2020 and −9.6°C in Sodankylä, the reference point for Levi and Saariselkä. But January 2026 held an average of −18.3°C, against a normal of −10.3°C, and in practice the thermometer most often sits between −15°C and −25°C. Dress for that last case. What to wear in Lapland? Three layers under the thermal suit, which is only lent during safaris, and a hired outfit for the days without a safari, in town or on the Arctic Circle.

How to get to Lapland: flights and the night train

How to get to Lapland? For winter 2026-2027, Rovaniemi has 37 direct routes, Kittilä 15, Ivalo 8 and Kemi-Tornio 2. The more routes an airport has, the wider the choice of days and airlines for a flight to Lapland. The UK has the widest choice of all: Rovaniemi is served direct from London Stansted, Gatwick and Luton, from Southend until 1 January, and from seven regional airports, from Manchester to Belfast, plus Dublin and Shannon. From London, Rovaniemi is 3 hours 15 to 3 hours 30 minutes away, with a daily Ryanair from Stansted. Kittilä has direct flights from Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Liverpool, and Ivalo from Gatwick at dates still to come. Tour operators’ charters come on top. With no direct flight on your dates, two options: a connecting flight, or Helsinki then the night train, which leaves in the evening and arrives in the morning.

Example: 15 December to 20 December, change the dates.

Things to do in Lapland with kids

What to do in Lapland with children depends first on the length of the day: in mid-December, Rovaniemi has only 2 hours 26 minutes of daylight, enough for one outing in the light, and the northern lights are sought at night. For husky sledding, read the programme carefully: the husky discovery lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, of which around 20 minutes of sledding over 3 km. The 10 km safari, for over-4s only, gives close to an hour. To see everything in one day, the Lapland Safaris “Santa Claus Safari” strings together reindeer farm, mini snowmobile, village and meeting in 5 hours to 5 hours 30 minutes, lunch included, from age 2. The northern lights, for their part, can be neither guaranteed nor forecast.

Ice hotel or glass igloo: where to sleep in Lapland

An ice hotel can be visited as a family, but a night there is not advised before 5 at the Arctic SnowHotel and before 7 at the Icehotel, in a room kept between 0 and −5°C. A glass igloo guarantees nothing: in central Lapland, the northern lights appear on roughly one clear dark night in two. Prices run from €229 a night, the starting price of a glass-roofed cabin in Saariselkä, to €6,309 for four nights with half board in a riverside igloo in Rovaniemi. Keep it for one or two nights, between nights in a chalet or a hotel.

Christmas markets in Lapland

Christmas markets in Lapland are rare, small and sometimes last a single day: treat them as a bonus of the trip. Only one runs all season, in Levi, with two catches worth knowing: it closes when the temperature drops below −20°C, and on Mondays, maintenance day, not all the stallholders are there. On 24 December at 15:00, the Declaration of Christmas Peace is read out at Zero Point, at the foot of the slopes.

Your questions about a Lapland holiday

Before booking, three points are worth checking. Meeting Santa first, free at the village and possible all year round, but subject on December peak days to an entry slot sometimes gone by midday. The −20°C threshold next, below which Lapland Safaris excludes under-2s and the Levi market closes. The direct flights last, to check on the airline’s website: the dates of the British Airways route from Gatwick to Ivalo are still to come. For everything else, the operator’s page is the reference: prices, opening times and age limits change from one season to the next.

From what age can you take a child to Lapland?

Any age: Santa Claus Village sets no limit, Lapland Safaris outings are free up to age 3 and the huskies take children from age 2, seated with their parents, except below −20°C. The advised age to enjoy the trip is around 3 or 4. Nomade Aventure sells its holiday from age 4.

How many days do you need for a trip to Lapland?

Four nights leave time to meet Santa, do two safaris and keep an evening for the northern lights: our three budgets are built on that format, from 13 to 17 December 2026. Tour operators sell roughly the same length: 5 days and 4 nights in Rovaniemi at Nomade Aventure, 6 days and 5 nights in Finnish Lapland at Voyageurs du Monde. In mid-December, Rovaniemi has only 2 hours 26 minutes of sunlight: plan one outing in daylight per day, with the northern lights sought at night.

How much does a Christmas in Lapland cost for a family of four?

It all depends on the scenario: our budget above details three options for two adults and two children, four nights in Rovaniemi from 13 to 17 December 2026, item by item. By comparison, tour operators’ packages start at around €14,000 for four at Christmas, at the starting price and with no child rate.

What is the cheapest time to go to Lapland?

November, then March. In Finnish Lapland, a hotel room cost on average €213.43 a night in November 2025 and €230.86 in March 2026, against €323.51 in December 2025, the peak month, when Rovaniemi’s hotels were 93.5% full. For flights too, December is in principle the most expensive month to Rovaniemi. Santa’s office receives visitors all year round and SantaPark opens from 31 October 2026.

How do you avoid the Christmas crowds?

Go in November: Finnish Lapland recorded 225,205 overnight stays in November 2025 against 622,449 in December. At Santa’s office, high season from mid-November to early January, come later in the day. Hotels in Inari (Saariselkä) were 76% full in December 2025, Rovaniemi’s 93.5%.

Are the northern lights guaranteed?

No, they can be neither guaranteed nor forecast. They appear on roughly one clear dark night in two in central Lapland (Levi, Saariselkä) and one in four around Oulu and Kuusamo. The best months are February-March and September-October, not December.

Can you take your own photos with Santa?

At the village office, no: personal photos and videos are not allowed in his room, an elf photographer takes them, and the official digital pack sells from €57. At SantaPark and on the private meetings at Porovaara, Wonderlapland and Arctic Dreams House, your own photos are allowed.

Which direct flights from the UK for Christmas 2026?

To Rovaniemi, whose airport is 3 km from Santa Claus Village and 10 km from the city centre, 3 hours 15 to 3 hours 30 minutes in the air from London: Ryanair daily from Stansted all winter, easyJet, British Airways and Norwegian from Gatwick, easyJet from Luton and Southend. Outside London, easyJet flies from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Belfast and Newcastle, and Ryanair from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool. To Kittilä (Levi): easyJet from Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Liverpool. To Ivalo (Saariselkä): British Airways from Gatwick, dates to come. Kemi-Tornio has no scheduled route from the UK, and the published direct flights to Kiruna start in Stockholm, Copenhagen and, in late winter, Düsseldorf.

How do you get to Levi without a car?

Through Kittilä airport, 15 km away, with a shuttle to the Levi hotels for every scheduled flight: easyJet from London, Manchester and Liverpool, Transavia from Paris, Brussels Airlines from Brussels, Edelweiss from Zurich. Or on the night train from Helsinki to Kolari, around 80 km away, where a bus meets every train.
