The raw charm of the real thing

Kaysersberg is the anti-Strasbourg. No Ferris wheel, no piped music, no standard-issue chalets. Just a beautifully preserved medieval village, 30 hand-picked chalets, and an atmosphere close to what Christmas markets must have felt like in the old days. The half-timbered walls, the river Weiss running through the village, the castle perched on its hill: the setting needs nothing more.

4 weekends and that is it

Kaysersberg market only opens on the 4 weekends before Christmas (Friday to Sunday, 10am-8pm). This limited format keeps quality and authenticity high. The exhibitors, artisans and makers from all over France as well as from the village, are selected against a strict set of criteria that keeps resellers out.

Exhibition and concerts

The highlight away from the chalets is the Christmas exhibition “Mémoire de nos hivers d’enfance” (memories of childhood winters), in the Salle de l’Arsenal behind the town hall, free to enter from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027: 2pm-6pm Monday to Thursday, 10am-8pm on market weekends, then 2pm-6pm from 21 December, closed on 25 December and 1 January. Choral concerts are held in the church of Sainte-Croix, whose acoustics are remarkable. The mood is hushed, almost spiritual.

Wine from the winegrowers themselves

Kaysersberg sits in the heart of the Alsace vineyards. The village winegrowers serve their own mulled wine, made with Gewurztraminer or Pinot Noir and their own blend of spices. It is in a different league from the industrial stuff: every stand has its recipe, and you can taste it. Have it with a bredele biscuit baked by the village grandmothers.

Our tip

Kaysersberg is tiny and the market only opens on the 4 weekends before Christmas. Come early on Saturday morning to enjoy the village almost empty. Sunday afternoon is the busiest time. The cobbled lanes are not suited to wide pushchairs. Climb up to the castle for a bird's-eye view of the illuminated rooftops.
