Münster, in North Rhine-Westphalia, keeps Advent in its old town, around the Prinzipalmarkt, the historic town hall and the towers of its churches. Under the name Advent in Münster, the Münster Christmas market brings together six markets within a radius of about 500 metres: Rund um das Rathaus, the Lichtermarkt St. Lamberti, the Weihnachtsdorf am Kiepenkerl, the Giebelhüüskesmarkt, the Aegidii-Weihnachtsmarkt and the X-MS Weihnachtsmarkt, open from Monday 23 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026 with the same hours at every one. This is the German city we are talking about, not to be confused with Munster in the Alsatian valley. The city publishes its 2026 leaflet in German, Dutch and English: visitors come from the region and from the neighbouring Netherlands, an hour's drive from Enschede.
Rund um das Rathaus and Lichtermarkt St. Lamberti: the heart of Münster Christmas market
The Rund um das Rathaus market fills the Platz des Westfälischen Friedens, the Peace of Westphalia square, in the inner courtyard of the historic town hall on the Prinzipalmarkt. The city presents it as the largest and oldest Christmas market in Münster, without publishing a founding date. Its operator, the Messe und Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland, announces around 90 stalls, 70% crafts and 30% food and drink, a canopy of lights strung above the aisles, the Lichterhimmel, and a nostalgic carousel for children. The same operator says it expects about a million visitors over the season: that is its own forecast for this one market, not a count for all six.
150 metres away, at the end of the Prinzipalmarkt, the Lichtermarkt St. Lamberti stands on the Lambertikirchplatz, at the foot of St Lambert's church. Its 30 exhibitors occupy blue huts with pointed roofs, around the tallest Christmas tree in the city. On the bell tower, the Himmelsleiter (“ladder to heaven”) installation by the artist Billi Thanner is part of the Advent scenery. One date to note: this market closes on Tuesday 22 December, a day before the others.
Kiepenkerl, Überwasser, Aegidii and X-MS: the four other markets
The four other markets are spread across the old town, each with its own character. On the Spiekerhof, the Weihnachtsdorf am Kiepenkerl forms a small Christmas village between the half-timbered houses, around the statue of the Kiepenkerl. This is the market for Westphalian specialities and home-made Glühpunsch. A little further west, the Giebelhüüskesmarkt is set up on the Überwasserkirchplatz, in front of the Liebfrauen-Überwasser church, with a view of the illuminated towers of St Paul's cathedral; the city describes its atmosphere as student-flavoured. It also closes on 22 December.
To the south-west, the Aegidii-Weihnachtsmarkt, on the Aegidiimarkt, is the family market: a large wooden Christmas pyramid whose carillon rings every half hour, a large nativity scene, a fairy-tale world (the Märchenwelt) and, in 2026, a visit from the Nikolaus. The X-MS Weihnachtsmarkt, on the Harsewinkelplatz, bills itself as the market “from Münster, for Münster”, with local and regional produce presented as sustainable, at the foot of the Kirschensäule, Thomas Schütte's cherry column. From the Rathaus, the furthest of them, the Giebelhüüskesmarkt, is about 500 metres away as the crow flies. You walk from one to the next without needing a map.
Each market has its own operator: the portal and joint communication are handled by Münster Marketing, the city's own department, while the Lichtermarkt, the Aegidii and the X-MS publish their own websites. The official leaflet, in three languages, lists the six markets with their opening hours.
Grünkohl, Reibekuchen and Glühpunsch: what to eat
The food at the markets is Westphalian first and foremost. At the Aegidii, the menu announced by the organiser runs from Bratwurst to Grünkohl, curly kale, by way of Reibekuchen, fritters of grated potato, and crêpes. To drink, Glühwein, Glühbier (hot beer) and hot cocktails. At the Kiepenkerl, the focus is on Westphalian specialities and a home-made Glühpunsch. At the Rathaus, about one stall in three serves food or drink, the rest being given over to crafts.
For what sets German Glühwein apart from Alsatian vin chaud or a punch, our article on mulled wine and its variations compares the recipes.
Münster singt, the zoo and the Mühlenhof: Advent beyond the huts
The city's programme goes beyond the six markets. On Sunday 6 December 2026, from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, “Münster singt” gathers a mass Christmas sing-along on the Domplatz, the cathedral square, led by David Rauterberg, free entry. Throughout Advent, six of the city's carillons play Christmas tunes. Two events take place outside the centre, with their own dates, and do not count among the six markets: the “Fire & Ice” Xmas Lights at the Allwetterzoo, from 26 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, Wednesday to Sunday 5pm-9pm, then daily from 16 December; and the Westphalian Christmas market at the Mühlenhof open-air museum, on the weekends of 28 and 29 November, 5 and 6, 12 and 13, 19 and 20 December 2026, Saturdays 2pm-8pm and Sundays 12pm-7pm.
Münster Christmas market 2026: dates, opening hours and getting there from France
- Dates: Monday 23 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026 for the Rathaus, Kiepenkerl, Aegidii and X-MS markets; the Lichtermarkt St. Lamberti and the Giebelhüüskesmarkt stop on Tuesday 22 December. Opening day falls the day after Totensonntag, Germany's Sunday of the Dead, and nothing reopens after the 23rd: no market on 24, 25 or 26 December.
- Opening hours, the same at all six markets: 11am-8pm Sunday to Thursday, 11am-9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Free entry to all six markets. The Coesfelder Kreuz park-and-ride costs €5 a day on Saturdays, bus included for up to five people; the three other park-and-rides are free.
- Train: Eurostar links Paris Gare du Nord to Cologne in 3hr20, then an ICE or IC takes 1hr42 at the fastest to Münster (Westf) Hbf, with up to 44 direct services a day. The total journey time depends on the connection in Cologne: check it on bahn.de before booking. Eurostar also serves Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen and Dortmund from Paris. The station is about 750 metres from the Rathaus.
- Car: 628 km from Paris (about 6hr40 without traffic), 407 km from Lille (about 4hr35), 488 km from Strasbourg (about 5hr) and 329 km from Brussels (about 3hr40).
In town, on Advent Saturdays, city buses run every 30 minutes until about 9pm, every 20 minutes on some routes, with night buses after that. The Coesfelder Kreuz park-and-ride, nearly 1,000 spaces, is open on Saturdays 8am-11pm; you pay by QR code, there is no ticket machine, and routes 11 and 12 drop you at the Aegidiimarkt stop, routes 1 and 5 at Altstadt/Bült. The free park-and-rides are Weseler Straße, Albersloher Weg/Nieberdingstraße and Preußenstadion. City-centre car parks are signposted by the dynamic guidance system; coaches have a dedicated car park at Schlossplatz Nord, for up to 100 coaches, with a drop-off point on Von-Vincke-Straße.
For visitors with reduced mobility, the city publishes a “Barrierefrei durch Münster” map in German and English, and every year a guide to the markets for people with disabilities (reserved spaces around the Domplatz, wheelchair-accessible toilets); four disabled parking spaces are reserved at the Stubengasse car park, and those on Heinrich-Brüning-Straße are withdrawn for the duration of the markets. The tourist office, Münster Information, is at Heinrich-Brüning-Straße 7 (Monday to Friday 8am-6pm, Saturdays 9am-4pm) and in the historic town hall, Prinzipalmarkt 10; an information cargo bike tours the centre on the four Advent Saturdays, 11am-3.30pm.
Münster pairs well with the big Christmas cities nearby. In Germany, Cologne Christmas market and Düsseldorf Christmas market are on the road back to France. In the Netherlands, the RB64 regional train links Enschede to Münster in a little under 1hr20, one departure an hour, which puts Zwolle Christmas market and the Dickens Festijn in Deventer within the same trip. From Amsterdam, allow 3hr24 by train with one change, 2hr49 from Arnhem.
Our tip
Come on an Advent Saturday via the Coesfelder Kreuz park-and-ride (€5 with the bus for five people, payment by QR code) and start with the Lichtermarkt St. Lamberti: it closes on 22 December, a day before the others.
