Cambrai Christmas market has a scent all of its own, a mix of fresh mint and caramel that comes straight from the famous bêtises, the striped sweet born of an apprentice's blunder around 1830. Place Aristide-Briand fills with wooden chalets, lights and a toboggan run, all in the shadow of a 62-metre belfry listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You're in the very heart of the Cambrésis, in the Nord, in a part of France where the sweet tradition is part of the local identity.

What awaits you on Place Aristide-Briand

Around thirty chalets set up in the town centre, stocked with local produce, decorations, street food and hot drinks. In the middle of the village, a toboggan run and funfair rides keep families busy while food lovers make the rounds of the stalls. It all stays on a human scale, without the crush of some big neighbouring cities, which makes for a pleasant stroll even on a Saturday evening. People come as couples, families or groups of friends, hot chocolate in hand, and the lighting on the square is enough to make you want to linger.

The programme isn't limited to the main square. At the end of November, a neighbourhood market sets up near the old annexe station, with a visit from Father Christmas and mascots for the little ones, and a community event on Rue Raymond Gernez completes the line-up. Enough to spread your visit over several weekends if you live nearby.

Bêtises, the belfry and the food of the Cambrésis

You can't talk about Cambrai Christmas market without stopping at the bêtises. This mint sweet, streaked with a caramelised stripe, has been listed in the inventory of France's culinary heritage since 1992. Two historic confectioners, Afchain and Despinoy, have always argued over who invented the recipe, and an 1889 court case eventually settled the matter in its own way. Taking home a tin is still the most fitting souvenir, and each house has kept its own way of making them, so comparing the two is well worth it.

On the savoury side, the Nord holds its own around the chalets: andouillette, tarte au sucre (sugar tart), filled waffles and regional beers keep you going as you wander. Mulled wine flows too, naturally, and if you want to make it at home, a mulled wine recipe is easy to find. Between tastings, the belfry deserves a look up: built from the 15th century onwards, it served as the bell tower of the former Church of Saint-Martin and towers over the whole town.

Dates, opening hours and practical information

In 2025, Place Aristide-Briand hosted the market from 28 November to 28 December (dates may change from year to year). The opening hours recorded that year: 2pm to 8pm from Sunday to Thursday, until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, 2pm to 6pm on 24 December and closed on the 25th. For 2026, the town publishes the final programme every autumn, so it's best to confirm the dates before booking a weekend.

Getting there Cambrai-Ville station on foot, car park on Place Aristide-Briand

Cambrai-Ville station is within walking distance of the centre, a real plus if you'd rather leave the car behind. If you're planning a trip to the Nord, the big chalet market in Lille, the market on the Grand-Place in Arras and the one in Amiens can all be visited on the same trip. Remember to put the exact address into your satnav, as the square also serves as a car park outside the festive season.

Our tip

Take home a tin of bêtises from Afchain or Despinoy, the town's two historic confectioners, and climb the belfry for the view over the Cambrésis before nightfall.
