The spirit of the North
Lille at Christmas is as warming as a bière de garde by an open fire. The Christmas market on Place Rihour is northern conviviality in action: people chat, strangers clink glasses at the craft beer chalet, and the filled waffles get shared. The atmosphere is down to earth, relaxed and thoroughly ch'ti.
Place Rihour and Vieux-Lille
Close to 90 chalets fill Place Rihour from 18 November to 30 December 2026. The Ferris wheel, now the icon of Christmas in Lille, turns on the neighbouring Grand-Place (Place du Général-de-Gaulle) until 16 January 2027 and gives you a view over the Flemish rooftops and the belfry. Carry on into Vieux-Lille and the cobbled streets and baroque façades are strung with garlands and Christmas trees.
A foodie's heaven
Lille is a city that likes to eat well, and its Christmas market proves it. The waffle filled with vergeoise (the North's soft brown sugar) is THE speciality: soft, caramelised, addictive. You will find it at Méert, the historic pâtisserie founded in 1761, or straight from the market chalets. Christmas beers from the craft breweries of the North flow freely, and carbonade flamande (beef braised in beer) takes the chill off the cold evenings.
Lille plus Belgium
One of Lille's big advantages is where it sits. Bruges is 1h30 away, Brussels 1 hour, Ghent 1 hour. You can easily pair the Lille market with a Belgian one for a cross-border weekend. Some operators even run day trips by coach from Lille to the Flemish markets.
Our tip
Pair Lille with a hop over to Belgium: Bruges is 1h30 by car and its Christmas market is gorgeous. In the evening, Vieux-Lille with its illuminated cobbled streets is worth the walk after the market. Lille's filled waffle (not the Brussels waffle) is eaten warm: try the one from Méert, an institution since 1761.
