Douai Christmas Market

Douai Christmas market comes in two parts: craftspeople and makers in the main courtyard of the town hall, and a festive village on Place d'Armes, all at the foot of a UNESCO-listed belfry whose 62-bell carillon marks the rhythm of the day.

Douai Christmas market makes itself heard before you see it. The carillon in the belfry, one of the largest in Europe with its 62 bells, rings out its tunes over the town while the main courtyard of the town hall fills with craftspeople. You will find two moods just a few steps apart: makers and workshops under the town hall arcades, and a warm funfair feel on Place d'Armes.

The belfry, the carillon and the spirit of the North

In Douai, you cannot help looking up. The belfry rises to 61 metres, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses a 62-bell carillon that has marked the rhythm of local life since the Middle Ages. In December, the tower becomes the canvas for a video-mapping show that dresses the Gothic stone in moving light after dark. The town also keeps alive the memory of the Gayant giants, processional figures 8.50 metres tall listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, who parade every July but remain Douai's emblem all year round.

That heritage comes through in the atmosphere of the market. This is Hauts-de-France, land of thick waffles, tarte au sucre, bêtises de Cambrai and bières de garde. Chatting with the producers is part of the fun: a brewer telling you about his recipe, a chocolatier explaining his praline, it all gives the stroll real depth.

Two venues, two moods

The craft and makers' market sets up in the main courtyard of the town hall, at 86 rue de la Mairie. You will find handmade jewellery, handcrafted Christmas decorations, scented candles, wooden toys, ceramics, and regional produce stalls: craft beers, cheeses, chocolates, gingerbread. Every evening, a concert livens up the aisles, with a line-up that moves from pop rock to swing, and from slam poetry to French chanson and jazz.

Two minutes away, Place d'Armes turns into a festive village. The Ferris wheel towers over the rooftops, Father Christmas's chalet collects children's letters, rides turn for the little ones and the food chalets serve waffles, tartiflette, chips and hot chocolate. For a homemade mulled wine once you are back, our mulled wine recipe sets out the spices and quantities.

Getting there and making a day of it

Douai station, on the Paris-Lille line, is about ten minutes' walk from Place d'Armes, which makes the train a handy way to come without a car. By car, the town-centre car parks are still the best option, with easy access from the A21 and A1. The historic centre is easy to explore on foot, a real plus when you combine the market, the belfry and the shopping streets.

Douai sits in a triangle packed with markets in the North. Around thirty kilometres away, Lille sets out its Ferris wheel and village on the Grand-Place, in a more urban, bustling style. To the south, Arras market and its Flemish Grand-Place are worth the detour for a two-stop day. That gives you a Christmas weekend in Hauts-de-France without clocking up the miles.

Our tip

Come in the late afternoon on a Friday or Saturday: you catch the craft market in daylight, the video mapping on the belfry as night falls, and the Place d'Armes village in the evening. The station is ten minutes' walk away, handy if you come by train.
