The flavours that make this market what it is

Mulled wine and Christmas treats at the Santa's Village stand

in the spirit of a Belgian market

About forty minutes' drive from Lille, Bellewaerde park changes its look for the festive season: fir trees, garlands and mulled wine replace the usual summer queues. Bellewaerde at Christmas, officially named Christmas at Bellewaerde Park, takes place in Zillebeke, on the edge of Ypres, in West Flanders. The event is a paid theme park experience, with shows, a trail of lights and activities designed for families with children, rather than a traditional Christmas market.

Christmas at Bellewaerde Park: four worlds for the festive season

The park divides its winter season into four themed areas. Santa's Village brings together wooden chalets, a mulled wine stand and Father Christmas's workshop, with the feel of a small covered market. Aztec Alps has swapped its indoor ice rink for a roller-skating rink, called Aztec Roller since 2025, along with a play area and a 4D cinema named Sleigh Ride, where seats and effects follow the rhythm of the film. Dream Lights sets out a trail of lights through the park's paths, designed to be explored on foot between rides. Magic Forest hosts the Lucioza show, a short production blending light and music. Several rides change their names for the holidays, and an ice palace completes the picture. The park itself mentions a Christmas market on its page for groups, on top of the four worlds already described. Nothing like the craft chalets of a town centre, though: here, it's very much a theme park, with a paid ticket and rides on the programme. The target audience is mainly families: the youngest enjoy Father Christmas and the decorations, older children the renamed rides and the roller rink, with enough on offer to fill a whole day.

Bellewaerde at Christmas 2026-2027: dates and opening hours

The season runs from 5 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, dates confirmed on the park's official website. Outside the school holidays, Bellewaerde only opens at weekends: 5, 6, 12 and 13 December. The park then opens daily from 19 to 24 December, and again from 26 to 31 December, before reopening on 2 and 3 January 2027. Standard hours are 11am to 7pm, reduced to 11am-5pm on 24 and 31 December. The park is closed on 25 December and 1 January. The day-by-day detail, hours and closures included, comes from a third-party calendar, as Bellewaerde has only published its season dates and its December weekends: better to check again before leaving if you're planning well in advance. This mix of weekends and then school holidays calls for a little planning: a trip from France fits better on a Saturday or Sunday in December than on a weekday outside the holidays, when the park is closed.

Tickets and budget for a family of four

The winter 2026 price has not yet been published: tickets are sold at dynamic prices on the official ticketing site, the only reference for what you will pay in December. Entry is free under 1 m. Bellewaerde regularly offers reduced prices for booking online in advance: a look at the official website before your visit often means paying less than at the ticket office on the day. The Tiqets booking platform also lists the park among its partners, an option worth comparing depending on the period. For example, a one-off promo-code offer in winter 2025 brought the child price down to €33 instead of €41 during a promotion: a sign that prices move with the season and partnerships, with no guarantee of the offer returning from one year to the next. Parking costs €12 per car per day online, or €13 on site; factor it into your budget, as well as lunch if you don't bring a packed lunch. Over a full day, a family of four needs to budget for admission, parking and food on site, well above the cost of a classic free-entry Christmas market. This budget is comparable to a day at any Belgian or French theme park during the festive season: the child price, free entry under 1 m and online discounts are the simplest ways to bring it down.

Getting there and places to stay near the park

From Lille, allow about 40 minutes by road: take the A25 towards Dunkirk, then the N38 via Armentières to Ypres. From Dunkirk, the route follows the A25 and then, once you've crossed the Belgian border towards Veurne, the Belgian A19 motorway to Ypres. By train, Ieper (Ypres) station serves the town, with a bus to the park entrance. For visitors coming from further afield, Paris is about 260 kilometres away, nearly 2 hours 45 minutes by road. Its proximity to Lille makes it possible as a day trip, with no overnight stay. That's also what sets Bellewaerde apart from other Belgian Christmas parks: Pairi Daiza, near Brugelette, and Walibi Belgium, near Wavre, are both an hour or more by road from Lille, while Bellewaerde is less than half an hour from the French border.

Bellewaerde has no on-site hotel, unlike some other parks in the region. For an overnight stay, head to Ypres, a few minutes away by car: the town, known for its belfry and rebuilt Cloth Hall, offers several hotels and B&Bs. Those extending their stay in northern France often use Lille or Dunkirk as a base, with Bellewaerde as a day trip. If you'd like to pair the park with a real Christmas market, head to the centre of Ypres or one of the neighbouring towns, where the atmosphere is completely different: craft chalets, mulled wine on sale with free entry and no ticket needed.

What to know before you book

Christmas at Bellewaerde Park is aimed first and foremost at families with young children, drawn by Father Christmas, the trail of lights and the indoor attractions. The ticket is a budget item in its own right, nothing like a free stroll between chalets, and opening days vary by period. Booking online avoids unpleasant surprises on price and availability on busy days, especially at weekends. As for clothing, bring warm layers: a good part of the programme takes place outdoors, between the chalets of Santa's Village and the Dream Lights trail. The park provides free wheelchairs and accessible toilets, with an ACCESS'Pass wristband to make access to rides easier; visitors with reduced mobility must nevertheless be accompanied by an able-bodied person, due to safety rules on some rides. Finally, winter weather in Belgium changes from one day to the next: a look at the local forecast before you set off avoids disappointment.

Our tip

Buy your ticket online before your visit: prices are often better than at the ticket office on the day.
