The Prague Christmas market occupies two squares in the city centre: Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) and Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí). The company Taiko has run both markets since 2004; the City renewed its contract in 2016. The 2026 edition opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 and closes on Wednesday 6 January 2027, every day from 10am to 10pm. Prague City Tourism, the City’s tourist office, published these dates in June 2026.
Old Town Square, the heart of the Prague Christmas market
In 2025, the Old Town Square market had 82 points of sale, up from 81 in 2023. The stalls sell Czech Christmas decorations: glass baubles, straw ornaments, ceramic and wooden objects, decorations made from corn husks, beads or dried fruit. You will also find ceramic and wooden nativity scenes, bobbin lace, crocheted toys, bells and biscuit cutters.
The tree towers over the square. The organiser lights it on Saturday 28 November 2026, opening day. As of 8 October 2026, the tree had not yet been chosen: the organiser is looking for a Norway spruce of 23 to 25 metres, which it will trim to 22 metres for safety. It will announce its choice by 2 November 2026 at the latest. In 2025, the spruce came from Lesné, in the Ústí region, and stood 26 metres tall. A light show dressed it every half hour, from 4.30pm to 9.30pm.
Prague City Tourism speaks of “hundreds of thousands of visitors” each year, without publishing a figure. The organiser cites CNN’s rankings: the market appeared in its 2025 list of the world’s best Christmas markets, and in its top 5 in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023.
Wenceslas Square, the second market
The second market stands in the lower part of Wenceslas Square, on the Na Příkopě and Můstek station side. It opens on the same dates and at the same times as Old Town Square. The organiser schedules entertainment there from Thursday to Sunday. It has not published the number of stalls on this square.
Dates, opening hours and 2026 programme
Both markets run from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, every day from 10am to 10pm. The organiser has not published opening hours for 24 December, 31 December or 1 January: check them on trhypraha.cz before you go on those days.
The 2026 programme is not out yet. In 2025, the stage on Old Town Square hosted folk groups and choirs every day from 4pm to 7pm. At weekends, Christmas workshops for children ran from 11am to 3pm.
Svařák, medovina and gingerbread
The stalls serve svařák, Czech mulled wine, medovina, a mead served hot, and punch. To eat: roast chestnuts, gingerbread, sausages, bramborák (a potato pancake) and trdelník (a pastry).
The Czech Republic does not use the euro: you pay in Czech crowns (CZK). According to the organiser, most stalls take cards, and there is a cash machine on the market. We do not publish prices: the last ones we recorded date from 2023.
Prague’s other Christmas markets
Other squares host a more modest market. Their 2026 dates had not been published as of 8 October 2026; we give those of 2025.
- Náměstí Míru (Prague 2), near St Ludmila’s church: the first market in the city to open, from 20 November to 24 December 2025, 10am to 8pm.
- Náměstí Republiky: two small markets, one on V Celnici street, the other in front of the Palladium.
- Kampa, below Charles Bridge: a community-run market, whose tree is lit on 5 December.
- Jiřího z Poděbrad (“Advent na Jiřáku”), Tylovo náměstí and Anděl.
Getting to the Prague Christmas market from western Europe
No direct train runs from France to Prague. In 2026, the operator European Sleeper runs a Brussels-Prague night train (ES 453) via Amsterdam, Berlin and Dresden, as well as a Paris-Berlin line. On the timetable of 7 October 2026, the train passes Dresden at 8.29am and Bad Schandau at 8.58am before arriving at Prague main station. We have not checked which days it runs in December: see europeansleeper.eu. For flights, we have not reviewed direct routes with the airlines: check their winter timetables before you book.
In the city, Staroměstská station (metro line A) and trams 2, 17 and 18 serve Old Town Square. For Wenceslas Square, get off at Můstek (metro line A) or at the Václavské náměstí tram stop. By car, the organiser points to the Rudolfinum car park (Old Town Parking).
- The Brno Christmas market, in the country’s second city, opens from 13 November 2026 with around 230 stalls.
- The Český Krumlov Christmas market makes a day trip from Prague.
- All four Czech markets in this guide are gathered on our page of Christmas markets in the Czech Republic.
Our tip
Come on Saturday 28 November 2026 for the tree lighting, or on a weekday evening between 4pm and 7pm for the stage programme. Bring a bank card or Czech crowns: the euro is not accepted. Check trhypraha.cz again before a visit on 24 or 31 December: as of 8 October 2026, the organiser had not published opening hours for those days.
