Between two Christmas markets, a warm break does you good. Badeparadies Schwarzwald at Christmas, in Titisee-Neustadt, is open all year round: a water park and thermal spa nestled under the fir trees of the Hochschwarzwald, between Freiburg im Breisgau and Lake Titisee, at the foot of the Feldberg. Three areas sit side by side under glass roofs, from the textile-free sauna to family slides. No chalets or mulled wine on site: the place is best enjoyed as a calm counterpoint to the nearby markets, a chance to catch your breath between market visits.

Badeparadies Schwarzwald at Christmas: a thermal interlude in the Black Forest

The park stands on a plot in the Hochschwarzwald, at Am Badeparadies 1, a few kilometres from Lake Titisee and the town of Neustadt. No specific Christmas programme (market, decorations, entertainment) is announced on the official website: the Badeparadies runs all year round on its usual hours, winter included. That is what makes it worth considering in December: a warm stop under glass when cold or rain takes away the urge to walk between the chalets.

Lake Titisee and the shingle-roofed houses of the Hochschwarzwald make up the wider setting of the visit. The region is known for its cuckoo clocks and its Black Forest gateau (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte), two symbols you will spot in the windows of the surrounding villages, with no direct link to the Badeparadies itself.

The Hochschwarzwald, the plateau around Titisee-Neustadt and the Feldberg, is a winter destination in its own right, with a frozen lakeshore and ski slopes nearby. Combining a stop at the Badeparadies with the markets of Freiburg im Breisgau, Gengenbach and, on the French side, Colmar, makes a coherent loop for a December weekend between Alsace and the Black Forest. Entry is charged, as for any water park and spa, and it is aimed first at families and couples looking for a warm break, quite different from a free Christmas market in a town centre.

Three worlds under one roof

Palais Vital brings together thirteen themed saunas, a pool called the Vital-Lagune and several mineral pools, in a textile-free area reserved for visitors aged 16 and over. Nudity is the norm there, as in most German saunas: worth knowing before booking a family visit. The saunas are split between dry and humid heat, so you can vary your sessions without constant trips outside. Palmenoase goes for a tropical feel: more than 300 real palm trees surround four heated mineral pools and a bar, under a large glass roof that lets in the winter light. Access is reserved for visitors aged 16 and over, except children up to and including age 3, who get in free every day; on Saturdays and Sundays, the family days, the age restriction is lifted. These family days open access to all ages, which changes the Saturday and Sunday crowd compared with a weekday.

Galaxy Schwarzwald changes tack: 23 slides, a large wave pool and a diving board, open to all ages with no restrictions. It is the area best suited to a family outing with young children, while Palais Vital and Palmenoase are better for a moment for two. The three areas do not share the same hours or the same visitors: Galaxy closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, while Palais Vital and Palmenoase stay open all week.

Winter hours and holidays

Normally, Palais Vital and Palmenoase open every day 9am-10pm. Galaxy Schwarzwald closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, opens 2pm-10pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, then 9am-10pm at weekends. These are the hours shown on the official website; nothing yet indicates any special arrangements for 24, 25, 26 and 31 December, or for 1 January.

Unlike an open-air Christmas market, the Badeparadies operates under glass: rain, wind or snowfall make no difference to your visit, only the official hours matter. A message to the park before you set off remains the surest way to find out the exact programme for the period, once it is published.

For a combined day, a simple plan is to spend the morning at the nearest Christmas market, then the afternoon and evening at the Badeparadies, open until 10pm. The reverse works just as well: a warm-up before braving the cold between the wooden stalls.

Prices, accommodation and budget

Prices vary depending on the area chosen (Palmenoase, Palais Vital, Galaxy or combinations) and the length of stay, but no amounts are publicly displayed on the information pages: the official online ticket office calculates the price when you book. Under these conditions, it is impossible to give a reliable budget for a family of four: it is best to go through the ticket office before setting off to know the exact amount. A discount of 2 euros per person applies on presentation of a valid regional transport ticket (bwtarif, Deutschland-Ticket or D-Ticket JugendBW). As at most German water parks and spas, tickets vary by age group and area, with full-day or half-day options: the exact details depend on the day and period chosen on the online ticket office.

Titisee-Neustadt is a spa town in the Hochschwarzwald, with a choice of hotels and guesthouses in every category if you want to stay longer than a day. In December, a busy tourist period in the region (Christmas markets and winter sports), booking accommodation well ahead avoids unpleasant surprises, whether your stay is limited to the Badeparadies or extends to the nearby markets.

Some visitors choose to stay higher up, near the Feldberg winter sports resorts, linked to the Badeparadies by the B31 then the B317, to combine skiing and thermal relaxation in a single stay.

From Colmar or Freiburg im Breisgau: how to get to Badeparadies Schwarzwald

By car from Freiburg im Breisgau or Donaueschingen, the B31 leads to the Neustadt-West exit, where the park is located. From Colmar, the simplest option is to head to Freiburg im Breisgau and then continue on the same B31: the route crosses the Black Forest by road rather than by direct motorway. By train, the Höllentalbahn line links Freiburg im Breisgau to Titisee station; from there, bus 7257 serves the park, or it is a walk of about 1,200 metres, signposted from the station. There is a car park on site.

In December, the road between Freiburg im Breisgau and Titisee climbs into the mountains: snow and ice are possible, and Germany requires winter tyres whenever conditions call for them. As for what to pack, a swimsuit and a towel are essential for enjoying Palmenoase or Galaxy, as well as warm clothes for the trip to and from the station or car park.

On the way back, allow some extra time in the evening: the mountain road, the early December darkness and a last trip to the changing rooms all add time compared with the outward journey.

Our tip

Check the opening hours for each area before you go: Palais Vital and Palmenoase follow different time slots from Galaxy Schwarzwald.
