A family Christmas near Lille: Bellewaerde, Plopsaland, Pairi Daiza

· 11 min read

A family Christmas near Lille can happen on the other side of the border, in one of the three Belgian parks that open for the holidays: Bellewaerde at the gates of Ypres, Plopsaland on the coast at De Panne, Pairi Daiza in Hainaut. All three can be reached by car in about an hour from Lille, but they offer neither the same day out, nor the same dates, nor the same budget. This article compares what each has in store for parents with children for the 2026-2027 season, based on the three parks’ official pages, and refers to the site’s listings for the detail of each park.

Three parks, three ideas of a family Christmas near Lille

Bellewaerde is a theme park that switches to winter mode: rides dressed up for the holidays, a roller rink, Santa’s village and a light trail. It is the closest to Lille, at 40 km, and the one that is easiest to visit in a day, without a night on site.

Plopsaland Belgium, in De Panne, speaks to younger children: the Maya’s Toy Story show, a Christmas elf to meet, a costumed parade. In 2026 the park launches an event presented as new, “Noël magique”, and it has its own resort, with Christmas packages that come with prices.

Pairi Daiza is not a theme park but a zoo and gardens, in Brugelette, towards Mons and Ath. Christmas Time adds illuminations along the paths, light sculptures, snowflakes over La Terre du Froid and food chalets, while the animal park stays open during the day. The 2026 dates of the event are not yet published, but the park opens every day over the holidays and stays open until 31 January 2027.

Bellewaerde: the closest, from 5 December 2026 to 3 January 2027

Bellewaerde announces its Christmas season from 5 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, on three matching pages of its site (home, events, corporate). Take good note of that date: several third-party calendars still online announce a start on 28 November, and the operator no longer confirms that date. The first two weekends, 5-6 and 12-13 December, are the only opening days before the school holidays.

Bellewaerde has not yet published its day-by-day calendar for December; a third-party calendar gives daily opening from 19 to 24 December and from 26 to 31 December, then on 2 and 3 January, from 11am to 7pm, with closing at 5pm on 24 and 31 December and two days closed, 25 December and 1 January. These hours remain to be reconfirmed on the official site before leaving, especially if you are aiming for Christmas Day.

The programme brings back Santa’s Village, a roller rink called Aztec Roller, the Dream Lights light trail, the Aztec Alps and Magic Forest worlds, and rides decked out for the holidays; the corporate page also mentions a Christmas market in the park. The detail of the worlds is in the Bellewaerde at Christmas listing.

On prices, nothing to report for winter: the park has published no rate for the Christmas period, and the grid shown online is the summer one, valid until 11 October 2026. Two markers still hold: the price changes every day, and a ticket bought online costs up to €9.50 less than at the gate. Parking comes to €12 per car online, €13 at the ticket offices. For the rate on your chosen day, go through the official ticketing site.

From Lille, allow 40 km and a good forty minutes without traffic; the entrance is at Meenseweg 497 in Ypres (Ieper). By train, the official route goes via Kortrijk, then a train to Menen and bus 80 (Menen-Ieper) to the entrance; from Poperinge, train to Ypres then the same bus 80 the other way. Bellewaerde has no hotel: to sleep, Ypres or Lille.

Plopsaland: “Noël magique” from 21 November to 3 January, open on Christmas Day

Plopsaland Belgium opens the ball on 21 November 2026 with “Noël magique”, which the park presents as a brand new Christmas event. Until 16 December, it only opens on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am to 5pm (21-22, 25, 28-29 November; 2, 5-6, 9, 12-13 and 16 December). From 19 December to 3 January 2027, it opens every day, 25 December and 1 January included: 10am-6pm until 30 December, 10am to 1am on the 31st, 11am-6pm from 1 to 3 January. It then closes from 4 January to 5 February 2027 and reopens on Saturday 6 February.

On the programme from 21 November: the Plopsa Christmas Parade, the first Christmas version of the park’s parade, which runs once night has fallen; a new show, Maya’s Toy Story; meeting the Christmas elf on the Plopsaland Plaza, renovated and decorated for the occasion. From 19 December, the Samson & Marie Kerstshow is added, available with a combined ticket or a stay, and hotel guests have their own show, “Le Lutin de Noël et le Livre de contes magique”. The park warns, on every day of its calendar, that some rides may close in cold weather.

The dated ticket starts at €36 (price checked on 30 September 2026 on the official site, where a banner also shows “from €38”: the price depends on the day). The undated ticket, valid for a year, costs €56, and a family ticket for three people €135. No Christmas-specific grid is published, and the calendar shows no price per day for winter.

To sleep on site, Plopsaland Resort prices its “Noël magique” packages (prices checked on 30 September 2026 on the park’s Dutch-language page): Theater Hotel from €170 per person per night, with two park days, breakfast and parking (based on a room for four, night of 29 to 30 December); Plopsaland Village from €82 per person per night (two nights, three park days and access to Plopsaqua, based on a villa for six); Studio 100 Chalets from €68 per person per night (based on a chalet for four).

Journey: 78 km and a little over an hour from Lille without traffic, 21 km and about twenty minutes from Dunkirk. Without the resort, Dunkirk or De Panne serve as a base. The detail of access is in the Plopsaland at Christmas listing.

Pairi Daiza: the animals under the lights, Christmas Time still without dates

Pairi Daiza stays open until 31 January 2027; its calendar gives daily opening from 10am to 6pm over the holidays, 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January included. What the park has not published is the Christmas Time 2026 calendar: neither dates nor late openings (the hours stop at 6pm everywhere).

The dated reference is the 2025-2026 edition: from 29 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, with late openings until 8pm from 20 December to 4 January, and closing brought back to 6pm on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, with reduced entertainment on those days. The programme counted more than a million LEDs, including 480,000 for 106 animal sculptures, an illuminated Christmas train, projections on the water from La Terre du Froid, on the abbey tower and the Mini-farm shed, and a Christmas market in the heart of the illuminated park.

A gospel choir sang every day from 2pm to 7pm, replaced by piano concerts on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, and Santa’s post office opened in the Dome. The 2026 Christmas Time page, undated, lists again the illuminations along the paths, the light sculptures, the first snowflakes over La Terre du Froid and the food chalets.

Prices, for their part, are dated day by day on the official calendar. An adult (12 to 64) pays from €43 (price checked on 30 September 2026 on the official site): €43 on weekdays outside the holidays, €49 on the weekends of 5-6 and 12-13 December (as on 14-15 and 22 November), €52 every day from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Six “Journées du Cœur” fall within the period, on 21, 27, 28 and 29 November then 2 and 11 December: on those days, entry costs €25 for everyone, children included, online only (no single-day ticket at the gate).

A child aged 3 to 11 pays €37 to €46, a senior aged 65 and over €41 to €50, and entry is free under 3. Add €13 for parking (same price online and on site) and a €7 supplement for Edenya. Tickets bought at the gate cost €5 more than online.

From Lille, allow 76 km and about an hour without traffic; 56 km and under 50 minutes from Valenciennes. To sleep, the park sells its own accommodation on its site, and Mons or Ath serve as a base outside. Access by train and visiting tips are in the Pairi Daiza at Christmas listing.

The table for choosing between the three parks

Journeys are calculated without traffic from the centre of Lille; prices are those checked on 30 September 2026 on the official sites.

Park From Lille 2026-2027 Christmas season Open on 25 December Adult, price checked on 30 Sept. 2026 Sleeping on site
Bellewaerde (Ypres) 40 km, approx. 45 min 5 Dec. to 3 Jan., weekends then daily from 19 Dec. no, according to a third-party calendar to be reconfirmed not published (summer grid online) no: Ypres or Lille
Plopsaland (De Panne) 78 km, approx. 1 hr 5 min 21 Nov. to 3 Jan., Wed., Sat. and Sun. then daily from 19 Dec. yes, 10am-6pm from €36 yes, Plopsaland Resort
Pairi Daiza (Brugelette) 76 km, approx. 1 hr park open daily over the holidays, season until 31 Jan.; Christmas Time dates not published yes, 10am-6pm from €43 (€52 from 19 Dec. to 3 Jan.) yes, park accommodation

Four questions are usually enough to decide:

  • The children’s ages. A programme of shows and character meets, as at Plopsaland, holds the youngest; rides dressed up for Christmas and a roller rink, as at Bellewaerde, speak more to older kids. Pairi Daiza relies on animals and lights, which works at any age but means a lot of walking.
  • The target day. On a December Wednesday outside the holidays, Plopsaland (10am-5pm) and Pairi Daiza are open, not Bellewaerde, which only opens at weekends before 19 December. On 25 December, Plopsaland and Pairi Daiza open, Bellewaerde does not according to the third-party calendar available.
  • The night on site. Plopsaland and Pairi Daiza have accommodation in the park; Bellewaerde points to Ypres or Lille. For a day trip without a hotel, Bellewaerde is the only one of the three under 45 minutes away.
  • The lights. Bellewaerde’s Dream Lights trail and Pairi Daiza’s sculptures are seen at night; at Pairi Daiza, as long as the 2026 late openings are not published, closing stays at 6pm, which leaves little time in the dark in December.

A day’s budget for two adults and two children

The calculation is only possible where prices are published. At Pairi Daiza, with the grid checked on 30 September 2026, two adults and two children aged 3 to 11 pay from €160 on a weekday outside the holidays (2 × €43 and 2 × €37) and at most €196 (2 × €52 and 2 × €46) during the Christmas holidays, plus €13 for parking: €173 to €209 buying online, before meals and excluding Edenya. A Journée du Cœur brings the family down to €100, plus parking.

At Plopsaland, four dated tickets from €36 make €144 at the lowest, with no Christmas-specific grid; the €135 family ticket only covers three people. Parking is paid on top (rate on the park’s site). At Bellewaerde, impossible to cost anything as long as the winter rates are not online: only parking is known, €12 online or €13 at the ticket offices. In all three cases, a ticket bought online for a specific date remains the rule, and the official site gives the exact price for the day.

Combining the park with a Christmas market in the Nord or in Belgium

A park takes up a whole day; a family weekend is rounded off with a free-entry market, the day before or the day after. From Lille, the Lille Christmas market is the easiest to fit in. On the road to Plopsaland, the Dunkirk Christmas market is about twenty minutes from the park. For Pairi Daiza, the Valenciennes Christmas market is under 50 minutes’ drive away, and the Mons Christmas market can be visited from the same hotel base.

The other markets of the Hauts-de-France region, such as Arras or Amiens, and those of Belgium, such as Tournai or Bruges, let you stretch the stay over two or three days. For markets that think of children (rides, workshops, Santa), the guide to family-friendly Christmas markets sorts them out.
