In Valkenburg aan de Geul, in Dutch Limburg, the Valkenburg Christmas market takes place underground. Two marl caves dug beneath the town, the Gemeentegrot and the Fluweelengrot, each house a paid Christmas market, open from 13 November to 30 December 2026, in galleries lit with fairy lights. Around them, the whole event known as Kerststad Valkenburg (“Valkenburg Christmas Town”) runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with an illuminated parade through the historic centre, sand sculptures, a winter village and nativity scenes in the neighbouring villages. From France, you get there via Liège and Maastricht, in about 4h30 by car from Paris (406 km).

The Valkenburg Christmas market in the marl caves

Valkenburg is a small town in the Geul valley, between Maastricht and Heerlen, built on marl hills riddled with galleries. Those galleries provide the setting: the stalls, the trees and the lights fill corridors of yellow stone, under cover, which changes everything when it rains. The organiser of the Gemeentegrot presents it as “the oldest, largest and most visited underground Christmas market in Europe”, and the Fluweelengrot claims “the most beautiful underground Christmas market in Europe”: two in-house slogans, to be read as such. The official Kerststad website adds, for 2025, the titles of best Christmas parade in Europe, best Christmas market in the Netherlands and a seventh place in a European ranking, without naming the body that awards these prizes.

The official website exists in French, under the name Village de Noël de Valkenburg (villagedenoelvalkenburg.fr), and in German (Weihnachtsstadt Valkenburg): a sign of the audience it is aimed at, on both sides of the Belgian and German borders.

The Gemeentegrot: opening hours, tickets and time slots

The Gemeentegrot, the municipal cave, is at Cauberg 4, at the foot of the hill of the same name. Its Christmas market is open from 13 November to 30 December 2026, Monday to Friday from 11am to 7pm and at weekends from 10am to 7pm, with reduced hours on 24 and 30 December (11am to 6pm) and on 26 December (10am to 6pm). Closed on 25 December. Entry is by half-hour time slot, with no exit time, and the organiser advises buying online: a full slot stays full.

2026 online prices, €0.30 fee included: €9.30 for an adult from Monday to Thursday, €11.30 from Friday to Sunday, €6.80 for a child aged 5 to 11, free up to the age of 4 with a free ticket that still has to be booked. Add €0.50 per transaction, and €1 more per ticket bought at the on-site ticket office. Allow 1 hour to 1h30 for the visit, according to the organiser. The cave is wheelchair accessible; dogs are not allowed, even carried, apart from assistance dogs. Not all exhibitors take cards: bring cash.

The Fluweelengrot, beneath the castle ruins

The Fluweelengrot, the velvet cave, opens at Daalhemerweg 27, beneath the ruins of Valkenburg castle. Its Christmas market, with 2026 being the 27th edition according to the official page, has more than 60 stalls in the galleries, on the same dates as the Gemeentegrot, from 13 November to 30 December 2026. Adult tickets online cost €9 from Monday to Thursday and €11 from Friday to Sunday, €5 for children aged 4 to 11, free under 4, excluding service fees; groups of 20 or more get €0.50 off per ticket. A combined ticket with Ongelofelijk Zand, the new sand sculpture festival set up in the Nieuwe Kerk, costs €17.50 on weekdays and €19 from Friday to Sunday.

The two caves can be done in the same day, with a break between them to walk through the centre.

Parade, WinterGlow and sand sculptures: the rest of Kerststad

The Landal Christmas Parade, a procession of illuminated floats and dancers, crosses the historic centre from 14 November to 30 December 2026, on a route approved for 2026 and 2027; the Grote Straat, the Berkelstraat, the Muntstraat and the Theodoor Dorrenplein are among the streets it takes. The days and times it passes are to be checked on kerststadvalkenburg.nl.

New for 2026, WinterGlow brings together a winter pavilion, a Father Christmas house and Christmas chalets above ground, from 13 November to 3 January. Kerst in MergelRijk shows marl and sand sculptures with a 30-metre miniature nativity scene; Winter Wonderland offers an underground nativity scene, a cable car and curling; cyclists have Grotbiken in Kerstsfeer, mountain biking through the galleries, from 14 November to 3 January. From 6 December to 3 January, the Kribkeswandelingen lead to the nativity scenes of the villages of Sibbe, Schin op Geul, Broekhem and Houthem.

Getting to Valkenburg from France

  • Train from Paris: direct Eurostar (formerly Thalys) from Paris-Nord to Liège-Guillemins from 2h14, then SNCB train Liège-Maastricht (one an hour, seven days a week, 37 minutes), then Arriva train Maastricht-Heerlen to the Valkenburg stop. From Germany, the RE18 line links Aachen to Valkenburg via Heerlen.
  • Locally: the station is within walking distance of the centre and the caves. During Kerststad, Arriva sells a €5 return ticket in South Limburg for one adult and two children, at off-peak times on weekdays, bookable for the period from 13 November to 3 January.
  • Park & Train: €19.25 including fees for a guaranteed space at the Q-Park car park in Heerlen (700 spaces a day) and the return train journey to Valkenburg for up to five people, a 10 to 16-minute ride.
  • Car: 406 km from Paris (about 4h30 without traffic), 242 km from Lille (about 2h45), 266 km from Metz (about 3h10). Valkenburg’s car parks are capped at €12 a day during Kerststad, tickets on sale on the official website.
  • The organisation asks visitors to come on weekdays and by public transport, as weekends are very busy.

Valkenburg combines with the Maastricht Christmas market, about fifteen kilometres away, and with the two big neighbouring Christmas cities, the Aachen Christmas market on the German side and the Liège Christmas market on the Belgian side, on the way back to France.

Our tip

Buy your tickets online for a weekday slot, the Gemeentegrot in the morning and the Fluweelengrot in the afternoon, and bring cash: in the galleries, some of the exhibitors do not take cards.
