Efteling at Christmas dresses the fairy-tale park at Kaatsheuvel, in the Netherlands, in a winter setting that lasts close to three months. Under the name Winter Efteling, the paths of the Fairy Tale Forest are coated in frost; in previous winters, an ice rink went up on the Warme Winter Weide and a Bavarian market replaced part of the usual food stalls for the season. The spirit of the park is untouched: legends, thrill rides and non-stop entertainment, but the low light of the late afternoon and the campfires give the whole thing a decidedly wintry tone.

Efteling at Christmas: what Winter Efteling offers

Every year, a good part of the park switches to its winter setting for what the Dutch call Winter Efteling, a season that generally runs from the second week of November to early February. The façades of the Anton Pieck village take on garlands, the paths of the Fairy Tale Forest get softer lighting, and most of the rides stay open depending on the day's weather. The park keeps the identity it has always had: a world of fairy tales, thrill rides and a rhythm designed to fill a whole day rather than a single market evening. Unlike a city-centre Christmas market, Winter Efteling takes over the entire park, which leaves time to combine rides, shows and food over a full day.

The Fairy Tale Forest, the historic heart of the park, keeps its automatons and costumed scenes all year round. In winter it suits a late-afternoon visit, when the sets stand out against a darkening sky and the garlands make up for weaker natural light.

The contrast with the summer season shows above all as the light goes: from 4pm in December, the avenues shift from broad daylight to garlands, and movement between the areas of the park slows to the pace of families stopping in front of the animated windows.

Ice rink, Bavarian market and campfires: the programme of previous winters

In previous winters, the outdoor ice rink on the Warme Winter Weide held a central place in the set-up, with skate hire on site. A few metres away, the Bavarian Market offered stalls inspired by the German markets: mulled wine, grilled sausages, pretzels and gingerbread were eaten standing, around campfires set up on the Anton Pieckplein. The show programme also follows the winter calendar, with seasonal versions of the Carousel Theatre and, in some years, a winter adaptation of Aquanura or Efteling Symphonica. The detail of the 2026 programme had not been published on the park’s pages as of 6 October 2026.

Families are happy to stop around the braziers set up on the Anton Pieckplein, for a break before taking up the rides and the Fairy Tale Forest again.

Winter Efteling 2026: dates, opening times and prices

Efteling announces Winter Efteling from 16 November 2026 to 31 January 2027 on its official site. The announcement usually comes in September or October. For reference, the 2025-2026 season ran from 10 November 2025 to 1 February 2026, open every day, with hours generally set from 11am to 6pm and extended to 8pm during the Christmas holidays, except on 31 December. The 2026 price list offers a dated ticket at €40, €47, €51, €54 or €56 depending on the day chosen, from age 4; entry stays free for children under 4, and parking costs €15.

The scale applies in the same way to adults and to children from the age of 4: no separate child price appears in the scale published by the park. Each day has its own price rather than a single rate, which is an incentive to book as soon as your visit date is settled. Better to check the scale on the official site before fixing a trip.

As with dated tickets at other European parks, school holiday dates fill up faster than ordinary weekdays. Buying early, once the date is chosen, reduces the risk of finding no slot left for the day you want, especially between mid-December and early January.

Getting there from France: train, car and shuttle buses

By car, Kaatsheuvel is about 2hr 30min from Lille, on the E17 towards Ghent and then Antwerp, before switching to the A16 towards Breda and Tilburg. From Paris, allow more like half a day on the road. Without a car, Eurostar links Paris to Rotterdam or Brussels; a rail connection towards 's-Hertogenbosch or Tilburg, followed by bus 300 or 301, completes the trip to the park entrance.

From Belgium, Antwerp is less than an hour away by road, which makes it possible to combine a day at Kaatsheuvel with a visit to a Belgian Christmas market over the same weekend.

The park has its own car park, charged on top of the entry ticket (€15 in 2026). From Tilburg station, bus 300 or 301 completes the journey to the entrance. The Hauts-de-France and Belgium remain short options for a day out.

Where to stay and the budget for a family of four

The park runs four places to stay on site: the Efteling Grand Hotel, the Efteling Wonder Hotel, the Efteling Bosrijk bungalows and the Efteling Loonsche Land lodges, all with park access included and dedicated Christmas and New Year packages. Kaatsheuvel and the neighbouring towns, such as Tilburg or 's-Hertogenbosch, offer other options for anyone who prefers to stay outside the park. For the festive season, the Christmas packages have arrivals on 24, 25 or 26 December 2026 depending on the accommodation.

Efteling Bosrijk, on the edge of the park, offers little houses in open countryside for a quieter stay, while the Efteling Grand Hotel and the Efteling Wonder Hotel are a few minutes' walk from the entrances.

As for the budget, a family of two adults and two children choosing dated day tickets can expect to pay between €160 and €224 for the four entries depending on the day chosen, plus €15 for parking if arriving by car. A night on site pushes the bill up, but it saves the return trip in a single day and leaves time to enjoy the park in the evening.

That calculation covers entry and parking only: food on site, from a mulled wine to a full meal, comes on top and varies with what everyone fancies. Setting aside an extra budget for meals and hot drinks is realistic for a whole day in the park.

Winter Efteling remains a paid event within the park, designed for families with young children attached to the characters of the Fairy Tale Forest, and quite distinct from a traditional Christmas market set up in a town centre. To extend the trip with a genuine street market, the Brussels Christmas market and the Antwerp Christmas market can be visited in a short day from Kaatsheuvel, as can the Lille Christmas market on the French side.

For a family from the north of France or from Belgium, a two-day break makes it possible to combine Winter Efteling with one of these markets, without having to choose between the two on the same day.

  • A dated ticket is bought online before the visit; the 2026 scale ranges from €40 to €56 depending on the day.
  • In previous winters, the Bavarian Market and the campfires were concentrated in the late afternoon, around the Anton Pieckplein.
  • Aim for a weekday outside the Dutch school holidays to limit queueing at the most popular rides.
  • Warm clothes and closed shoes remain useful for the outdoor queues.
  • The park hotels let you spread the visit over two days and enjoy Winter Efteling in the evening.
