Guebwiller Christmas market sits at the mouth of the Florival, the valley that climbs towards the Grand Ballon, around Place Saint-Léger and its Romanesque collegiate church. The town stretches along the Lauch, wedged between the first slopes of the Vosges, and that valley setting gives the market a feel quite unlike the big cities down on the plain. You climb, you turn into narrow streets, and the light from the chalets catches the pink sandstone façades.

What strikes you first is the religious heritage, out of all proportion for a town this size. Guebwiller lines up three churches from three eras: the collegiate church of Saint-Léger, a masterpiece of Rhineland Romanesque that overlooks the market square, the church of Notre-Dame with its neoclassical interior, and the former Dominican convent, now a cultural centre. Doing the market here also means stepping from one style to the next within a few hundred metres.

Where and when Guebwiller Christmas market takes place

The heart of Guebwiller Christmas market beats on Place Saint-Léger, at the foot of the collegiate church, where the chalets of local artisans and designers line up. Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, for its part, hosts the food village and the children’s village, with the ice rink and the carousel. A third, quieter spot is the Cave Dîmière, home to the Lions Club craft market.

In 2025, the market on Place Saint-Léger ran from 29 November to 21 December, on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 3pm to 8pm. Place de l’Hôtel de Ville kept the party going into early January, with the ice rink and carousel open on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For 2026, the town usually repeats the same pattern over the Advent weekends: the exact dates are still to be confirmed on the official programme, so keep an eye out in November. Entry is free.

Noël Bleu, the Dominicans and the spirit of the Florival

The market is part of Noël Bleu, the festival that dresses the whole town for the season. Despite the name, it is not only about blue lights: the lighting plays on a whole palette of shades that redraws the squares and monuments as dusk falls. Every weekend brings its share of acrobats, brass bands and dancers to the streets.

The highlight takes place at the Dominicains de Haute-Alsace. In the cloister, a sound and light show tells “Le grand voyage de Papa Noël”, which takes Father Christmas across the seven continents. On the museum side, the Théodore Deck museum and the Château de la Neuenbourg open exhibitions during the season. Enough to slot in a cultural visit between two laps of the chalets, especially when the valley cold starts to bite.

What to eat and what to take home

The food village plays the Alsatian card without hesitation: bredele in every shape, brioche mannele, gingerbread, chocolates and Christmas beer. At the mulled wine stalls, the scent of cinnamon and orange leads you to the bar (to make it at home, the mulled wine recipe lives elsewhere). Anyone with a sweet tooth will leave with a box of bredele or a slab of gingerbread to last until the holidays.

Guebwiller has a wine card to play too: it is one of the few towns in France with several Alsace grand cru vineyards within its boundaries, on the slopes of the Florival. A Riesling or a Gewurztraminer from the area goes well with your shopping, best tasted at a wine merchant’s rather than on the market.

Getting there and good habits

Guebwiller is easy to reach from Colmar, around thirty kilometres to the north, and from Mulhouse, a little further south. You arrive via the D430 and then up the valley. Parking is in the town centre car parks, a few minutes’ walk from the market squares. The paths around Saint-Léger are level, fine for pushchairs and wheelchairs alike. Aim for a late weekend afternoon: the light fades, the illuminations come on, and the collegiate church takes on its full presence above the chalets.

Our tip

Come late on a weekend afternoon: the Noël Bleu illuminations come on and the collegiate church of Saint-Léger towers over the chalets. Keep a slot for the sound and light show at the Dominicains.
