Regional specialities
Bordeaux canelés, Merlot mulled wine, foie gras from the Landes, Arcachon oysters, Limousin chestnuts, Limoges porcelain.
Christmas traditions
Bordeaux's markets are spread across several sites in the UNESCO-listed city. The market on the Quai des Chartrons showcases produce from the Bordeaux area.
From Bordeaux to the Basque Country, by way of the Périgord and the Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine lives up to its culinary reputation. Foie gras, truffles, chocolate, duck breast, prestigious wines: its Christmas markets are among the most food-focused in France, in a rare architectural setting.
The signature markets
The Bordeaux market, on the Allées de Tourny, goes for elegance: oysters served on the spot, Baillardran canelés, mulled wine made with Bordeaux, a view of the columns of the Grand Théâtre. Sarlat, in the Périgord Noir, hosts one of the most gastronomic markets around (fresh foie gras, black truffles in season) in a golden-stone medieval town. Bayonne offers a Basque market on the Vauban ramparts, in France's chocolate capital since the 17th century.
Specialities to try
South-West foie gras in every form (fresh, mi-cuit, in jars), dried or smoked duck breast, confit, Bayonne ham, gâteau basque, fine chocolates, Bordeaux canelés, dunes blanches. Black Périgord truffles in season (mid-December to late January). Wines from Bergerac, Saint-Émilion and Pessac-Léognan. This is a region you taste more than you visit.
Practical tip
For the ideal gourmet weekend, aim for Bordeaux plus a day trip to Sarlat (1h30 by car) or Saint-Émilion (45 min). Pair the Bayonne market with a visit to Espelette (home of the AOP pepper). Bordeaux by TGV from Paris: 2h05. Book the gastronomic restaurants 4 to 6 weeks ahead for December.
