The La Rochelle Christmas market runs along the Cours des Dames, on the quayside of the Vieux-Port, almost with its feet in the water. The medieval towers of La Chaîne and Saint-Nicolas stand directly opposite the chalets. You stroll between the smell of roasted chestnuts and the salty Atlantic air, which gives this market an atmosphere rarely associated with Christmas markets.

A Christmas market on the edge of the Atlantic

The heart of it all sits on the Cours des Dames, the lime-tree-lined esplanade that runs along the trawler basin. Around thirty artisans and designers set up their wooden cabins here to sell jewellery, decorations, works of art and small treats, all made in France. The fairy lights are reflected in the water of the harbour, and on the other side of the quay, the 14th-century towers close the scene like a theatre curtain.

The most eagerly awaited moment is still Santa's arrival. He does not turn up by sleigh but by sea, aboard an SNSM lifeboat, which is a very La Rochelle way of doing things. At the 2025 edition, his arrival in the Vieux-Port drew families and onlookers one December afternoon, amid shows and illuminations.

A few minutes' walk away, Place de Verdun hosts a Christmas village geared more towards children, with large domes housing illuminated automata and a little train reserved for 3 to 6 year olds. A third hub sets up on Place de la Motte Rouge, where a Ferris wheel towers over some twenty chalets and a few fairground rides.

The Cours des Dames is right in the centre, about ten minutes' walk from the SNCF railway station. The Vieux-Port and Encan car parks are the closest, but they fill up fast on a December weekend: heading for a park-and-ride and finishing by bus is the calmer option. The site is all on one level and accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. A La Rochelle bonus: the stop for the sea bus and the Passeur ferry is on the quay itself, a short walk from the towers.

Charentais treats and a maritime spirit

The local table makes a change from the Alpine repertoire you find elsewhere. Here, the festive aperitif revolves around Marennes-Oléron oysters, shucked on the spot facing the harbour, and sometimes cagouilles, the little Charentais snails simmered in a local sauce. On the sweet side, galette charentaise and tourteau fromager, the cake with the unmistakable blackened dome, go with the coffee. Pineau des Charentes completes the line-up of regional specialities, as the signature taste of the local terroir.

To warm up between two chalets, mulled wine remains the classic reflex. If you want to make it again once you are home, start with our guide to mulled wine and its variations. On site, hot chocolate, crêpes and waffles keep out the sea cold just as well.

Extending your visit in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

La Rochelle pairs well with the other festive events along the Atlantic coast. If you are heading north, Nantes Christmas market is worth the detour for its scale and its illuminations. Further south, Bordeaux Christmas market spreads its chalets along the Allées de Tourny. Both are easy train rides from La Rochelle station, enough to string together several festive atmospheres over one long weekend.

Our tip

Aim for a weekday at the end of the day to enjoy the illuminations reflected in the harbour without the weekend crowds, and park at a park-and-ride rather than in the packed centre.
