Pergine Valsugana is a town of about 21,600 inhabitants at 490 metres above sea level, the first stop in the Valsugana when you leave Trento heading east, between Lake Caldonazzo and the Lagorai mountains. Its Christmas market, for some years part of a winter festival called “Armonie d’Inverno” (winter harmonies), occupies the squares of the historic centre, Piazza Fruet and Piazza Gavazzi first among them. The dates of the Pergine Valsugana Christmas market for 2026 have not yet been published by the Valsugana tourist office; in 2025, the festival ran from 8 November to 24 December, with a closing evening on 31 December. The event is worth it for its valley-town atmosphere, with chalets under the arcades, concerts on Friday evenings and a heated family village.

The Pergine Valsugana Christmas market, square by square

The centre of Pergine comes down to a few squares and a shopping street lined with arcades, Via Maier, with Piazza Santa Elisabetta and its fountain, Piazza Gavazzi and its plane tree, Piazza Municipio in front of the town hall. The wooden chalets are spread between these squares, with the Trentino produce stalls on one side and the food on the other. The organisers highlight a family village, “Gnomoland”, set up in heated structures: creative workshops, board games, Christmas teas, educational activities and a few farm animals (sheep, hens, chicks) for the little ones.

The festival stands out from neighbouring markets for its evening programme. In 2025, “Venerdì LIVE” offered a concert every Friday, and the market opened that day from 3:30pm to 9:30pm, compared with all day at weekends. The tourist office also mentions Krampus processions, evenings around a fire, lantern parades, nativity scenes and food trails between the stalls and the town’s restaurants. The 2025 theme was “Connessioni”, the connections between people, places and flavours.

Trentino produce and vin brulé under the arcades

The food chalets of the Pergine Valsugana Christmas market serve Trentino cooking. The guides speak of Trentino food products and Christmas sweets, without a detailed menu: count on hot mountain dishes and seasonal cakes rather than a menu known in advance. Vin brulé is drunk on Friday evenings during the concert, under the arcades when it rains; to understand what sets the Italian recipe apart from its Alsatian and German cousins, we set out mulled wine and its variants in a dedicated article.

The market’s historic name, “Mercatino di Natale dei Canopi”, refers to the canopi, the miners who once worked the mountains around Pergine. This mining memory gives a theme to the decorations and to a few craft stalls (wood, metal, stone), even though the market has since taken the name Armonie d’Inverno to cover the concerts and entertainment. Trentino artisans sell decorations, wooden and woollen objects, candles and toys there.

Dates, opening times and practical details for 2026

The 2026 dates remain to be confirmed. In 2025, Armonie d’Inverno ran from 8 November to 24 December, with the market open on Fridays from 3:30pm to 9:30pm and all day on Saturdays and Sundays (10am to 7pm for the chalets, food until 9:30pm according to the guides), plus a New Year’s Eve evening on 31 December. A specialist website announces 2026 dates from 7 November, but neither the Valsugana tourist office, nor the festival website, nor the municipality confirmed them as of 22 September 2026: they will be added here as soon as they are officially published.

  • Where: historic centre of Pergine Valsugana, Piazza Fruet, Piazza Gavazzi and neighbouring streets, at 490 metres above sea level.
  • When: 2026 dates to be confirmed; in 2025, from 8 November to 24 December, Friday evenings and weekends, plus 31 December.
  • How much: free entry; allow €10 to €20 per person to eat on site and take home a decoration.
  • Parking: car parks at the ice rink (Palaghiaccio, Via al Ponte) and on Via Paludi, as indicated by the guides, then a few minutes’ walk to the centre.
  • Nearby: Levico Terme Christmas market and its Habsburg park are on the same railway line, Trento Christmas market at the other end, and Forte Tenna, between Lakes Levico and Caldonazzo, holds its own market in its vaulted rooms.

Pergine station is on the Valsugana line, between Trento and Bassano del Grappa, with regional trains in both directions all day; the line reopened in December 2025 after ten months of closure for the first phase of electrification work, but trains are still diesel-hauled, as the switch to electric service has been postponed; a few one-off interruptions with replacement buses remain possible in 2026, so check the Trentino Trasporti or Trenitalia timetable. The centre is flat and small; the organiser says nothing about the accessibility of the chalets or the family village. On Friday evenings, the squares fill up at concert time, and the parking spaces in the centre go fast: the train from Trento avoids the problem.

Getting to Pergine Valsugana from France

Pergine is the gateway to the Valsugana, one train stop from Trento. From France, the rail chain goes through the direct Paris-Turin-Milan TGVs and Frecciarossas, back on the Maurienne line since spring 2025, with five return services a day (three TGVs and two Frecciarossas), about six hours to Turin and seven hours to Milan. A closure for works in the Mont-Cenis tunnel is announced from 11 September to 9 October 2026, before the market period; check the state of the service when booking. From Milan, train to Verona then Trento, and in Trento the Valsugana regional trains to Pergine. You can also arrive via Venice, at the other end of the Valsugana line, passing through Bassano del Grappa.

By car, Fréjus or Mont Blanc tunnel (toll), A4 to Verona, A22 to Trento, Trento Sud exit, then the SS47 towards Pergine. From Lyon, it is a long day’s drive; from Nice or Chambéry, a well-filled half-day. By plane, Verona and Venice are the most convenient airports, with the train afterwards. Italian motorways are tolled, and the Brenner motorway is only useful for those coming from Germany or Austria.

Castel Pergine, the lakes and the Lagorai

Castel Pergine holds the hill above the town, with its curtain-wall towers and its oldest part clearly visible from the centre. Wikipedia reports that Giacomo Casanova stayed there on 6 and 7 November 1756, a few days after his escape from the prisons of Venice, an episode the town likes to recall. In December, the climb offers a view over the lit-up valley and Lake Caldonazzo, which stretches south of the town.

The Valsugana is a valley of orchards and passage, gentler than the Dolomites, with the Lagorai mountains to the north. Pergine is its natural chief town, a town of traders and artisans that does not try to compete with Trento on the number of chalets. The Pergine Valsugana Christmas market is best understood as a valley stopover: you come for a concert on a Friday evening, for the family village with children, or to carry on to Levico and Forte Tenna in the same day by train.

Our tip

Choose a Friday evening: the market only opens at 3:30pm that day, but stays open until 9:30pm with a concert on the square, and the train back to Trento saves you looking for a parking space
