Rovereto is the second city of Trentino, a town of about 40,000 inhabitants in the Vallagarina, between Trento and Verona, at 204 metres above sea level. Its Christmas market, called “Rintocchi di Luce” (chimes of light) in reference to the great peace bell that rings every evening on the Miravalle hill, is confirmed from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 by the tourist office. The Rovereto Christmas market is spread through the streets and squares of the historic centre, between a craft street, a food street and a family area. The town calls itself a “city of peace”, and the December programme picks up this thread: monumental nativity scenes, concerts, workshops and soft lights rather than big spectacle.

The Rovereto Christmas market in the historic centre

The organiser, the Rovereto and Vallagarina tourist office, describes a market in three zones. The central street brings together crafts, local products and Christmas creations; it runs through Via Roma, Via Mercerie and Piazza Erbe, the commercial heart of the old town. The food street sits between two of the main squares, with hot-food chalets and tables. The children’s zone occupies a separate space with workshops and entertainment. Palazzo Todeschi, a palace in the centre, hosts some of the design and craft stalls beneath its painted ceilings, which makes for a partly covered market, welcome on rainy days. The whole thing fits within a perimeter you can walk in half an hour without stopping, and in a good two hours if you stop at every chalet, which is the point.

The tree on Piazza Rosmini serves as a landmark: that is where the official switch-on opens the season, with a light show projected onto the façades. The 2026 programme has not yet been published; the organiser announces the details of the events for the autumn. The ice rink, the little train and the elves’ house on Largo Vittime delle Foibe were part of the previous edition; the official website does mention a pista del pattinaggio and a trenino for 2026, without specifying where they will be.

Trentino cooking and crafts on the stalls

The food street of the Rovereto Christmas market serves Trentino cooking: the organisers speak of “local excellences” without detailing the menu, so count on the classics of Trentino chalets, hot mountain dishes and pastries, rather than a menu fixed in advance. Vin brulé is served everywhere; we explained what sets it apart from Alsatian mulled wine in our article on mulled wine and its variants. The Vallagarina is also wine country, marzemino first and foremost, and the wine shops in the centre stay open throughout the market period.

On the craft side, the central street mixes local makers (wood, ceramics, textiles, candles) with Christmas decorations and the design objects presented at Palazzo Todeschi. The organiser recruits its exhibitors through a call for applications, with one street reserved for crafts and “local excellences”, and the palace for design.

Dates, opening times and practical details for 2026

The 2026 edition of “Rintocchi di Luce. Natale a Rovereto” is confirmed from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The 2026 opening times have not yet been published; in 2025, the market opened every day from 10am to 7pm, the food chalets until 8:30pm, with a closure on 25 December, an early closure at 5:30pm on 31 December and a midday opening on 1 January. The Palazzo Todeschi market, for its part, only opened at weekends, on public holidays and during the Christmas school holidays. Count on a similar pattern in 2026, to be checked on the official website before you leave.

  • Where: historic centre of Rovereto, Via Roma, Via Mercerie, Piazza Erbe, Piazza Malfatti, Via Tartarotti and Palazzo Todeschi, tree on Piazza Rosmini.
  • When: from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027; opening times to be confirmed for 2026 (10am to 7pm in 2025, food until 8:30pm).
  • How much: free entry; allow €10 to €25 per person for a meal at a chalet and a vin brulé, ice rink extra.
  • Parking: Rovereto Nord or Rovereto Sud exits on the A22, car parks on the edge of the pedestrian centre; campervan areas in Rovereto and neighbouring municipalities.
  • Nearby: Trento Christmas market is on the same railway line heading north, Verona heading south, and Arco Christmas market can be reached by bus along the Lake Garda road.

Rovereto station is on the Verona-Brenner line, and the historic centre is a short walk from the station forecourt. FlixBus coaches from Austria, Germany and the rest of Italy stop on Piazzale Orsi, near the station. The centre is flat and largely pedestrianised, but the organiser gives no information on the accessibility of the chalets or the covered areas.

Getting to Rovereto from France

Rovereto is one of the easiest towns in Trentino to reach by train from France. The direct Paris-Turin-Milan TGVs and Frecciarossas have been running again since spring 2025 through the Maurienne valley, with three TGVs and two Frecciarossas a day, in about six hours to Turin and seven hours to Milan. A closure for works in the Mont-Cenis tunnel is announced from 11 September to 9 October 2026, before the market opens; still, check the state of the service when booking. From Milan, a train to Verona Porta Nuova, then a regional or long-distance train towards the Brenner that stops at Rovereto. Trains from Munich and Innsbruck via the Brenner also serve the station.

By plane, the tourist office puts Verona first: Catullo airport at Villafranca is linked by shuttle to Verona Porta Nuova station, from where you take the train to Rovereto. Bergamo and Treviso are the other options, with a city bus to the station then the train. By car, Fréjus or Mont Blanc tunnel, A4 to Verona and A22 heading north, Rovereto Sud/Lago di Garda Nord or Rovereto Nord exits. From Lyon, it is a long day’s drive, Italian motorway tolls included.

The peace bell, the MART and the castle

Rovereto was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, and the First World War left a deep mark on the town. The Campana dei Caduti, the bell of the fallen, rings every evening from the Miravalle hill in memory of the dead of all wars. It is to this bell that the market’s name, “Rintocchi di Luce”, refers, and a nativity scene was dedicated to it in 2025. Rovereto castle houses the Italian historical war museum, a serious visit that contrasts with the fairy lights of the centre. The climb to Miravalle can be done on foot from the town or by car; at the end of the day, you can hear the bell from the market streets, which gives the event’s name its meaning.

The MART, the museum of modern and contemporary art of Trento and Rovereto, is presented by Wikipedia as one of the largest contemporary art museums in Italy; its building by Mario Botta, opened in 2002, is a few streets from the market and makes a good shelter for a rainy afternoon. The town calls itself a “city of peace and sport”, and the tourist office plays on this image in the Christmas programme, with concerts and nativity scenes from several countries. If you are heading up from Verona towards Trento and Bolzano, the Rovereto Christmas market is a logical stop, halfway between the plain and the mountains.

Our tip

Start from the tree on Piazza Rosmini and walk up Via Roma to Palazzo Todeschi on a Saturday or Sunday, the days when its covered section opened in 2025 outside the Christmas holidays
