The Budapest Christmas market plays out on two squares in the centre of Pest, 600 m apart. The Advent Bazilika occupies St Stephen’s Square (Szent István tér), at the foot of the basilica, from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027; the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas sets up on Vörösmarty tér from 13 November 2026 and runs until New Year’s Eve. Both rely on Hungarian artisans, and the organiser of the Advent Bazilika credits it with four titles of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas market in the European Best Destinations vote. Three other Advent markets round off the season: the one in Városháza park, the one in the Buda Castle district and the one in Óbuda.
2026 dates and opening hours
The Advent Bazilika opens Monday to Thursday and on Sundays from 11am to 10pm, on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 11pm, from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. The holidays have their own hours: 24 December from 11am to 3pm, 25 and 26 December from 11am to 8pm, 31 December from 11am to 3am, and 1 January 2027 from 11am to 6pm. Entry is free.
On Vörösmarty tér, the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas welcomes visitors Monday to Thursday and on Sundays from 11am to 9pm, on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 10pm, from 13 November 2026. On 24 December, the stalls open from 10am to 2pm; on 25 and 26 December from noon to 6pm; on 29 and 30 December from 11am to 9pm; on 31 December from 11am to 3am. The artisans and the little train have their last day on 28 December 2026, after which the square is handed over to the New Year’s Eve party; the food stalls stay until dawn on New Year’s Day.
Around a hundred artisans at the foot of the basilica
The Advent Bazilika brings together around a hundred Hungarian artisans, ceramicists, designers, jewellers and leatherworkers, according to the organiser, who puts the market at fifteen years old in 2026. Food stalls, the big Christmas tree and the light projections on the façade of St Stephen’s Basilica complete the picture, with a programme every day. In 2025, according to the online magazine We Love Budapest, the projections started at 5.30pm and were repeated every half hour, and a mini ice rink awaited the children.
The market has been voted Europe’s most beautiful Christmas market in the European Best Destinations vote four times according to its organiser; the Hungarian press records the years 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023, with a second place in 2020.
Vörösmarty tér: artisans, a little train and Hungarian cooking
The market on Vörösmarty tér also relies on Hungarian artisans. Among the exhibitors named by the organiser: the horn combs of the Bartha house, founded in 1923, and the Pankotai leather goods. A free little train for children runs Monday to Friday from 2pm to 8pm and at weekends from 11am to 8pm, until 28 December.
On the plate, the menu displayed by one stall sets the tone: stuffed cabbage (töltött káposzta), venison stew (szarvaspörkölt), grilled sausage, paprika chicken, and dishes served in a loaf of bread. Prices are displayed in forints.
Budapest’s other Advent markets
Three markets rounded off the season in 2025, according to the We Love Budapest guide; check their 2026 dates before you go. The Advent market in Városháza park and on Deák Ferenc tér, presented as the municipality’s official market, opened from 14 November 2025 to 10 January 2026, with an ice rink until 31 January. The Advent in the Buda Castle district, at the Várkert Bazár and other sites on the hill, was held from 27 November 2025 to 11 January 2026. In Óbuda, the market on Fő tér ran from 28 November to 23 December 2025, its ice rink until 15 January.
Getting to the Budapest Christmas market
Several airlines serve Budapest from Paris and the major French cities, as well as from Brussels, Geneva, London, Madrid and Rome: compare flights when you book, some routes are seasonal. A weekend is enough for the two big markets.
In the city, St Stephen’s Square and Vörösmarty tér are 600 m apart, in the centre of Pest: both markets can be done on foot in the same evening. Városháza park is a few minutes from the basilica; Buda Castle is on the other side of the Danube, and Óbuda further north.
- The Vienna Christmas market opens from 13 November to 26 December 2026: the two capitals combine well in a single trip.
- The Prague Christmas market is the other great Advent event in central Europe.
- Further north, the Warsaw Christmas market is split between the old town and plac Defilad; and for a capital 2 hr 17 min from Paris by train, our London Christmas markets.
Our tip
The two big markets are 600 m apart: start with Vörösmarty tér, which closes an hour earlier, and finish in front of the basilica for the projections. If you are after the artisans of Vörösmarty tér, come before 28 December, their last day; the basilica market, for its part, stays open until 1 January 2027. Prices are displayed in forints.
