Christmas traditions
Rouen lights up its cathedral with a sound and light show that echoes Monet's paintings. The half-timbered medieval centre makes a picturesque setting for the markets.
Normandy does Christmas its own way: illuminated harbours, windswept cliffs, hot cider and seafood. Far from Alpine folklore, the region offers a maritime, farm-to-table experience, often in settings listed for their maritime or architectural heritage.
The signature markets
The Rouen market, on Place de la Cathédrale, is the most impressive thanks to its setting: the Gothic spire of Notre-Dame de Rouen towers over the chalets. Free video mapping on the façade. Caen runs a lively market on Place de la République, with an ice rink and a big wheel. Honfleur charms with its market on the Vieux Bassin, one of the most picturesque harbours in France. Deauville goes for seaside elegance.
Specialities to try
Normandy lays out its dairy and seafood riches. Raw-milk camembert, livarot, neufchâtel, pont-l'évêque, AOP Isigny butter, crème fraîche. To drink: spiced hot cider (the iconic alternative to mulled wine), pommeau, calvados (sold by producers at the markets). On the sweet side: Normandy apple tart, teurgoule rice pudding, sablés bénédictins. And of course oysters and scallops in season.
Practical tip
Rouen is 1h25 from Paris Saint-Lazare by train, ideal for a day trip. Caen is 2 hours away, and Honfleur needs a car (40 min from Caen). The Normandy climate is wet in December: a raincoat is a must. Pair your market with a visit to the D-Day beaches (from Caen) or a cider tasting at a cider farm in the Pays d'Auge.
