The prefecture of the Eure, set on the banks of the Iton, Évreux lights up for the festive season around its Notre-Dame cathedral and the belfry of the Tour de l'Horloge. The Évreux Christmas market takes over the town centre, Place du Général-de-Gaulle and the pedestrian streets around it, beneath the Gothic stained glass and the lantern tower that rises above the old town. Wooden chalets, an ice rink, a farmers' market and fairground rides make for a cosy break an hour from both Paris and Rouen.
A Christmas market at the foot of the cathedral
The heart of the celebrations is Place du Général-de-Gaulle, where the 250 m² ice rink sits among the lights. All around, the shopping streets put on garlands and dressed-up windows, as far as Rue de la Harpe, where small stands sell affordable gifts, often handmade pieces rather than mass-produced items. You drift from one chalet to the next, walk up towards Notre-Dame cathedral and the former bishop's palace, and follow the Iton, which runs through town in several channels lined with old mills. The route stays short and easy to follow: everything fits within walking distance, from the belfry of the Tour de l'Horloge to the riverbanks.
Évreux's atmosphere comes from this scale. The town does not have the sprawl of a big regional capital, and that is exactly what makes the stroll pleasant: you taste a piece of cheese handed over the counter, let the children go round twice on the same ride, and walk past the same chalet twice without any rush. The lights strung between the façades of the old centre bounce off the pale stone, and the early December nightfall turns the square into a warm bubble. Town-centre shops join in with festive window displays, which naturally extends the walk beyond the chalets.
The town also hosts a German Christmas market on Place du Général-de-Gaulle, with its pretzel machine, currywurst, wild boar sausages and mulled wine steaming in the cold. It is a proper corner of festive Germany, run by stallholders who come to share their pastries, spiced biscuits and wooden decorations. The smell of cinnamon and hot sugar reaches you as soon as you get near the stands, and a steaming cup soon finds its way between gloved hands.
Normandy treats at the Évreux Christmas market
You cannot walk through a market in the Eure without meeting local producers. The Département's Christmas farmers' market, held at the Hôtel du Département on Boulevard Georges-Chauvin, brings together around thirty producers who have been serving local people for more than twenty-five years. This is where you fill your festive basket with the best of Normandy, and the mood is calmer than under the town-centre chalets, with real conversations over a cheese board or a bottle of cider.
- Farmhouse cider and pommeau, to enjoy warm or chilled depending on your mood, plus a few bottles of calvados for the Yule log.
- Normandy cheeses: raw-milk Camembert, orange-rinded Pont-l'Évêque and heart-shaped Neufchâtel, a popular Christmas gift.
- Teurgoule, rice pudding baked for hours with cinnamon, golden and meltingly soft, served warm in its earthenware dish.
- Salted butter caramels and shortbread, perfect for keeping you going between two laps of the ice rink.
- Andouille sausage and country terrines, for anyone who prefers savoury to sweet under the chalets.
At the German market, hot pretzels and grilled sausages take over, washed down with a cup of spiced mulled wine. Enough to move from stand to stand without feeling the cold for long. To carry on at home, this mulled wine recipe comes here as hot spiced cider, a Normandy nod to the Alsace classic, using pommeau, cinnamon sticks and orange zest.
Ice rink, rides and family activities
The 250 m² ice rink is the children's anchor point on Place du Général-de-Gaulle. Around it, rides turn, creative workshops keep small hands busy, and a village of local associations and makers adds handmade items to the mix. Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated in early December, with music and parades through the streets of the centre.
Weekends follow the pace of an easy family outing: a spin on the ice, a waffle, a look at the makers' stalls, then back into the warm in a town-centre brasserie. Younger children have plenty to do between workshops and rides, while parents pick up gift ideas from the craftspeople. Most activities are free; only the ice rink charges, and modestly, which keeps the day's budget under control even for a group.
The dates of the 2026 edition have not yet been officially confirmed (they usually fall around the first half of December for the farmers' and German markets, and over a longer period for the ice rink and the lights). Keep an eye on the town's website before planning your visit, especially as the German market tends to focus on evening hours and the farmers' market on daytime.
What to see around the Évreux Christmas market
The visit is worth stretching beyond the chalets. Notre-Dame cathedral dominates the centre with its lantern tower and stained glass, some of which dates back to the Middle Ages. The building bears the marks of wars and successive rebuilding, which explains the mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles you can read on its façade. Right next door, the former bishop's palace houses the town museum, handy for warming up for a while when the cold starts to bite.
The belfry of the Tour de l'Horloge, right in the centre, is a useful landmark so you don't get lost between two rows of chalets. Below, the Iton splits into several channels running past old mills and footbridges; a short walk along the water, with the lights reflected in the current, makes a lovely end to the afternoon. Fans of urban walks will enjoy this green thread linking the highlights of the old town.
Getting there and nearby towns to combine
Évreux is about an hour by train from Paris Saint-Lazare, and the station is a few minutes' walk from the centre. By car, the A13 links the town to both Paris and Rouen in an hour, and several car parks ring the pedestrian area, which saves you circling for ages on a Saturday in December. Halfway between the Paris region and the heart of Normandy, Évreux is an easy stop on a festive weekend.
If you are staying in the area, several markets are within reach. The Rouen Christmas market and its illuminated cathedral are worth the trip, less than an hour to the north, as is the Caen Christmas market further west if you want to push on into Lower Normandy. Towards the Beauce, the Chartres Christmas market and its cathedral combine well with a stop in Évreux, since Chartres is a little over an hour by road to the south.
Our tip
Start at the ice rink on Place du Général-de-Gaulle, stop by Notre-Dame cathedral, then fill your festive basket at the farmers' market in the Hôtel du Département.
