Venice in December is the lagoon under the mist, fairy lights above the canals and a Christmas market of about thirty wooden chalets on Campo Santo Stefano, between the Accademia bridge and St Mark's Square. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its lagoon since 1987, counts 121 islands linked by 435 bridges, and its historic centre is now home to only some 48,000 inhabitants for around 30 million visitors a year. Venice Christmas market stays modest by the standards of the big alpine markets; what counts here is the setting, with Murano glass, Burano lace and marbled paper on the stalls, and vin brulé drunk standing on a campo while the vaporetti pass at the end of the street. From France, you arrive by train via Milan in a day, or by air at Marco Polo airport.
Venice Christmas market on Campo Santo Stefano
Campo Santo Stefano is a large elongated square in the sestiere of San Marco, a few minutes from the Accademia bridge and the galleries of the same name, and from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the other side of the Grand Canal. In December, the Confartigianato Venezia, the city's confederation of artisans, sets up Natale in Laguna there: about thirty wooden chalets arranged like a little alpine village, with fir trees and lights, run by Venetian artisans and a few exhibitors from further afield. Some of the stalls are entrusted to charities. The programme mixes concerts, choirs, children's workshops, tastings and a Santa's house where the little ones drop off their letter.
On the stalls, the lagoon's craftsmanship takes pride of place: Christmas baubles and jewellery in Murano glass, bobbin lace from Burano, masks, marbled paper and bound notebooks, candles, small nativity scenes and tree decorations. The food stalls offer cheeses and cured meats from the region, artisan panettone and Venetian biscuits, with vin brulé to warm up. The market is free, generally open 10am-7.30pm, a little later at weekends for the food stalls, and the square, flat and without steps, is easily crossed in a wheelchair or with a pushchair, which is not true of every route to get there.
St Mark's, the lights and the lagoon's other markets
Every year St Mark's Square receives a large tree between the Doge's Palace and the basilica, lit at the end of November; in 2025 the lighting was announced for 30 November, with a tree of some fifteen metres. For winter 2025-2026 the square also hosted Murano Illumina il Mondo, an installation of twelve Murano glass chandeliers hung beneath the Procuratie Vecchie, the fruit of a collaboration between international artists and the island's historic furnaces, on view from 21 November 2025 to 1 March 2026. The Christmas lights, switched on on 21 November in 2025, run along the Grand Canal, over the Rialto bridge and through the shopping streets until early January.
The rest of the municipality has its own events. On the mainland, in Mestre, Piazza Ferretto and Via Allegri receive wooden chalets, an ice rink and light installations from late November to Epiphany; in 2025, the local guides gave 23 November for the opening of Piazza Ferretto. Campo San Polo, in the historic centre, hosts an ice rink surrounded by food stalls. On Murano, the Christmas market is held among the glassworks, with glass-blowing demonstrations and a glass tree; on Burano, it is lace and a floating nativity scene on the canal; on the Lido, the chalets occupy the Gran Viale. On 21 December 2025, a procession of Santas in boats came down the Grand Canal, a recent tradition the city repeats year after year.
Dates, opening hours and practical information for 2026
The dates of the 2026 edition of Venice Christmas market have not yet been published by the Confartigianato Venezia or by the municipality. In past years, Campo Santo Stefano opened in the last week of November and closed between Christmas and Epiphany depending on the edition: the local guides did not agree on the closing date for 2025, between 24 December and 6 January, which is a reason to check before you leave. The Murano, Burano and Lido markets, for their part, ran from 21 November 2025 to 6 January 2026 according to the same guides; for Mestre, the guides agree neither on the opening nor on the closing.
- Where: Campo Santo Stefano, sestiere of San Marco, Accademia vaporetto stop (lines 1 and 2) or Sant'Angelo, then a few minutes on foot.
- When: 2026 dates to be confirmed. Usual opening in the last week of November, roughly 10am-7.30pm.
- How much: free access; allow €15-40 per person with the vaporetto, a vin brulé, some biscuits and a Murano glass bauble.
- Getting around: the city is pedestrian, you walk or take the ACTV vaporetto; a 24, 48 or 72-hour pass quickly works out cheaper than single tickets.
- Nearby: Verona Christmas market is on the Milan line, Bologna Christmas market on the Florence line, and Trento is reached via Verona for a day in the Alps.
The stepped bridges, including the Accademia, make access to the campo complicated in a wheelchair; the vaporetti are accessible, but the organiser says nothing specific about the accessibility of the market itself. In December, acqua alta remains possible on days of high tides: raised walkways are laid along the main routes, and the MOSE barrier system now protects the city during the highest tides.
Getting to Venice from France
The train takes a day, but only one change. According to seat61, you take the morning Frecciarossa from Paris-Gare de Lyon (departure 6.28am on weekdays, 7.30am at weekends), change at Milano Centrale with 25 minutes to spare on weekdays, about forty at weekends, and arrive at Venezia Santa Lucia around 4.42pm on weekdays, 5.12pm at weekends. The TGV and Frecciarossa Paris-Milan trains have been running again since spring 2025, with a break announced from 11 September to 9 October 2026 for works at Mont-Cenis, before the market season; check the state of the line when you book. Thello's direct Paris-Venice night train, suspended in March 2020, was withdrawn in 2021; the alternative is a TGV to Munich then the Austrian Nightjet from Munich to Venice. Watch the arrival station: Venezia Santa Lucia is in the city, a quarter of an hour's walk from the Rialto and twenty-five minutes from St Mark's, while Venezia Mestre is on the mainland.
By air, Marco Polo airport receives direct flights from Paris and several French cities depending on the season; you reach the centre by Alilaguna boat or by bus to Piazzale Roma, the city's road terminus. Treviso airport, a little further away, serves the low-cost airlines. By car, you go through the Fréjus or Mont Blanc tunnel then the A4 to the end, leaving the vehicle in a car park at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto, or more cheaply in Mestre with the train or tram to finish. Allow a long day from Lyon, more from Paris, on tolled motorways.
Venice in December: the Doges, the Rialto and the islands
December is one of the quietest months of the year on the lagoon, once the Immaculate Conception long weekend has passed, and the mist gives the Grand Canal the colours of Guardi's canvases. The Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica, with its golden mosaics, can be visited without a long queue; the Ca' Rezzonico and the Gallerie dell'Accademia, on the way to the market, fill a rainy afternoon. The Rialto bridge and its morning fish market, the Salute at the end of Dorsoduro, San Giorgio Maggiore seen from the Riva degli Schiavoni make up the familiar scenery, softer under the low winter light.
A day on the islands rounds off a visit to the market nicely: Murano for the furnaces and the glassworks, where you find the same Christmas baubles as on Campo Santo Stefano with the glassblower beside them, Burano for the coloured houses, the lace and the nativity scene on the water. In the evening, a bacaro in the Rialto district serves cicchetti and an ombra of wine, and the pastry shops line up frittelle from the end of the year, ahead of the carnival. As for vin brulé, the Venetian version is lighter and less spiced than its Trentino cousin; we have detailed the differences in the article on mulled wine and its variations. Venice Christmas market takes an hour to visit; the city, two days at least, and the tree on St Mark's at dusk, when the square empties, is worth the late afternoon on its own.
Our tip
Cross the Accademia bridge in the late afternoon to reach the campo as the chalets light up, then head back towards St Mark's along Calle Larga XXII Marzo to see the tree without the morning crowds
