The pink city in festive mode

Place du Capitole is 12,000 m² of pink paving, framed by the neoclassical facade of the Capitole on one side and shopping arcades on the other. When the market moves in at the end of November (26 November in 2026), the square becomes a village of white chalets (94 in 2025), along walkways lined with fir trees. The LED lights play on the contrast between Toulouse's pink brick and the white of the garlands.

The layout works in rings: chalets all around the edge of the square, with, in 2025, a 250 m² synthetic ice rink and a little train by the Théâtre du Capitole.

The flavours of Occitania

Local food takes centre stage. Producers from the Gers and the Lauragais come to sell cassoulet in jars, foie gras fresh or preserved, dried magret and charcuterie from Lacaune. Pyrenean sheep farms bring their matured cheeses (rocamadour, ossau-iraty, bleu des Causses), cut to order.

On the sweet side, Pillon chocolates (a Toulouse house founded in 1933) are the benchmark. The Toulouse violet, the city's emblematic flower, comes as crystallised sweets, syrup and confit. The local mulled wine is often made with Fronton (the AOC wine of the South-West, grown north of Toulouse), which makes a change from the usual Côtes-du-Rhône.

Ice rink and family fun

An open-air ice rink is set up on Place du Capitole during the season.

The two-storey antique carousel, dating from the 1900s and set up every year, is a rare piece. Children love it, parents take retro photos. Allow €3 a ride. Santa’s house, set up in 2025 in the enchanted village on Square Charles-de-Gaulle, welcomes visitors for a souvenir photo with no booking needed.

Nearby

Toulouse is an excellent base for visiting several markets in the South on a single trip. Albi (a UNESCO-listed episcopal city, 1 hour by train) has an intimate market beneath Sainte-Cécile cathedral. Carcassonne (45 minutes by TER regional train) hosts a market unlike any other in France, inside its medieval ramparts. Montauban and Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges round out the regional offer for heritage lovers.

Planning your stay

Toulouse by TGV from Paris takes 4 hours, which is a long way for a day return. Better to stay 2 nights. Hotels in the centre (around Matabiau or Place Wilson) stay affordable during the week and get busier at weekends. The Occitan climate is mild but can tip into rain or the autan wind: pack a fleece AND a light waterproof.

Also: Cassoulet, Lacaune charcuterie, Rocamadour, Toulouse violet, Croquants from Cordes-sur-Ciel

Our tip

Place du Capitole is windy, especially in the late afternoon. Bring a fleece even when it is 12 °C. Aim for a Sunday morning (10am-12pm) to enjoy it without the Saturday crowds. To go further afield, Carcassonne's market is 45 minutes away by TER regional train.
