Stockholm Christmas Market

The Stockholm Christmas market on Stortorget is held on the central square of Gamla stan, the old town: the Stortorgets julmarknad has been held there since 1837, and the Stockholms-Gillet association, in charge of it since 1917, presents it as the oldest in Sweden. In 2025, it brought together 41 chalets, open every day from 22 November to 23 December. In Djurgården, the Skansen open-air museum holds its own Christmas market, a tradition since 1903, at weekends only, from 27 November to 20 December 2026. Two old markets, two kilometres apart, that can be visited over the same weekend.

Dates and opening hours

In 2025, the Stortorget market opened on Saturday 22 November and was held every day until 23 December, Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 6pm, on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 7pm. The Skansen market is held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 27 November to 20 December 2026, that is on 27, 28 and 29 November, 4, 5 and 6, 11, 12 and 13, then 18, 19 and 20 December, from 10am to 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays, from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Stortorget: 41 chalets in the heart of Gamla stan

In 2025, the 41 chalets on Stortorget sold toffees, wrought ironwork, sausages and game meat, crafts, glögg, candy floss and ceramics, according to the organiser. Stockholms-Gillet tells the market’s story on its website: in 1837, 95 stalls crowded onto the square; the bakers dominated, with their saffron buns, their kringlor and their gingerbread; Italian immigrants from Lucca, in Tuscany, sold plaster churches; King Oscar II came to the market every 23 December, the day before Christmas Eve. Astrid Lindgren set her little Kajsa Kavat (1958) at a Christmas market, selling polkagrisar, the striped candy sticks.

Skansen: wood fires, waffles and crafts since 1903

At the Skansen open-air museum, on the island of Djurgården (Djurgårdsslätten 49-51), the Christmas market has been a tradition since 1903. The stalls offer crafts, design, sweets and handmade candles; wood fires are lit in the park, and you will find waffles, roasted almonds and mulled wine, according to the Skansen foundation. The market is included in the museum ticket, free from 0 to 15 years; the price varies by season and is cheaper online. Check the December 2026 price on skansen.se.

Getting to the Stockholm Christmas market

Stortorget is in the heart of Gamla stan; Skansen is on Djurgården, around two kilometres to the east. Stockholm is reached by air from France, Belgium, Switzerland, London, Madrid and Rome: compare the direct flights for winter 2026-2027 with the airlines and on Arlanda Airport’s website, some routes are seasonal. From Germany, the EuroNight Berlin-Hamburg-Stockholm night train, taken over by RDC Deutschland on 1 September 2026, runs all year round, three times a week in each direction: towards Stockholm, departure from Berlin on Mondays and Fridays at 6.39pm, from Hamburg on Wednesdays at 9.53pm, arrival at 9.45am, according to the operator’s timetable valid until 12 December 2026 (next timetable on nachtexpress.de).
