The Copenhagen Christmas market set up on Nytorv and Gammeltorv, two twin squares along Strøget, opens from 6 November to 21 December 2026. Its organiser has been putting on markets since 1988, and the market draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from Denmark and abroad. Entry is free, and a free ice rink lends out skates. The city has several other markets, and the map has changed: the historic Højbro Plads market is not being held in 2026, a new market takes its place on the same square from 14 November to 20 December, and Kongens Nytorv hosts only an ice rink. Tivoli, the neighbouring amusement park, has its own listing.
2026 dates and opening hours
The Nytorv and Gammeltorv market opens from 6 November to 21 December 2026: Monday to Wednesday from 11am to 8pm, Thursdays from 11am to 9pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 10pm, Sundays from 12pm to 7pm. It therefore closes three days before Christmas Eve. The new Højbro Plads market, Jul på Højbro Plads, runs from 14 November to 20 December 2026.
Crafts, Danish design and Glühwein on Nytorv and Gammeltorv
The market is held next to the courthouse (Domhuset), in log cabins. On the programme: crafts, Danish design and local specialities, a mulled wine named “den ægte Glühwein” (the real Glühwein) and a visit from Santa Claus. The ice rink is free, skate hire included, which makes it an easy stop with children.
Jul på Højbro Plads: Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands
A few minutes’ walk away, on Højbro Plads, a new market opens from 14 November to 20 December 2026, organised by Olsen Sj. ApS. It brings together traditions, flavours and crafts from Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. It replaces the historic Højbro Plads market, which is not being held in 2026: its organiser is preparing a move to Rådhuspladsen, the City Hall square, and the transfer of some of its exhibitors to Nytorv and Gammeltorv. The dates of the Rådhuspladsen market are to be confirmed.
Kongens Nytorv, the ice rink square
Do not look for a market on Kongens Nytorv: the large square hosts an ice rink, Copenhagen Winter Wonderland, which circles the equestrian statue of Christian V over 1,300 m².
Glögg and juleøl: Christmas traditions in Copenhagen
Danish glögg is a hot red wine with Christmas spices, cinnamon, orange, cloves, almonds and raisins, often served with a spoon. Hviids Vinstue, one of the city’s oldest bars, opened in 1723, launches its glögg every 11 November at 11am, a tradition that dates back to 1954. Christmas beer, juleøl, arrives from the first Friday of November: in 2026, that is 6 November, the opening day of the Nytorv market.
Getting to the Copenhagen Christmas market
Nytorv and Gammeltorv are five minutes’ walk from Gammel Strand metro station. Højbro Plads, Rådhuspladsen, Kongens Nytorv and Tivoli are all less than a kilometre from Nytorv: the tour of the markets is done on foot. Copenhagen is reached by air from France, Belgium, Switzerland, London, Madrid and Rome; compare the direct flights for winter 2026-2027 on the airlines’ websites and on Copenhagen Airport’s, some routes are seasonal. By train, the timetables via Hamburg are on the DB and DSB websites.
- Tivoli puts on its Christmas decor from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027: our Christmas at Tivoli listing details the season.
- The Stockholm Christmas market brings together Stortorget, held since 1837, and the Skansen market, at weekends from 27 November to 20 December 2026.
- The Oslo Christmas market, Jul i Vinterland, opens every day from 7 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 on Karl Johans gate.
Our tip
The map of the markets has moved: the historic Højbro Plads market is not being held in 2026 and Kongens Nytorv hosts only an ice rink, so do not rely on guides from past years. Nytorv and Gammeltorv close on 21 December; for the last days before Christmas, Tivoli stays open until 3 January 2027. On Fridays and Saturdays, the market closes at 10pm, two hours later than on Mondays.
