Regional produce at every stall

Ribeauvillé Christmas market is in a league of its own. While Colmar and Strasbourg roll out their chalets for five weeks, the town of the minstrels opens its medieval market for two weekends a year, and that is it. On 5, 6, 12 and 13 December 2026, the Grand’Rue turns into a medieval town: costumes, cervoise ale, wild boar on the spit and a fire-breathing dragon.

That rarity is its strength. The town turns away mass-tourism coaches and insists on regional produce at every stall. You feel the result within the first few metres: an atmosphere you will not find anywhere else on the Wine Route.

Two weekends a year, and that changes everything

Most Alsatian markets settle in for a month. Ribeauvillé chose the opposite: four days of opening, maximum intensity. The stalls are run by local associations, imported goods are banned and the town council openly discourages whistle-stop visits. Coaches squeezing three markets into one day go elsewhere, and that is deliberate.

In practice, you wander through a historic centre closed to traffic, among costumed residents who run their stalls as if playing a part. The line between market and village fête fades away, and that is what makes the place so endearing.

Dragons, knights and pewter casting: what happens in the streets

The entertainment goes well beyond the usual background music. Over the two weekends, the streets host:

  • a life-size dragon that breathes fire;
  • knights’ combat and a fire show in the evening;
  • demonstrations of the fire crafts, forging and pewter casting;
  • dances by the Dancerie des Ribeaupierre, storytellers and creatures on stilts;
  • a wooden carousel, a circus workshop and donkey rides for children.

Add the Three Kings with their camels and you get a living tableau closer to a historical re-enactment than to a conventional market.

Eating and drinking as in the Middle Ages

Wild boar on the spit is the emblem of the place: around 35 animals are roasted each weekend, and the aroma follows you from one end of the Grand’Rue to the other. Alongside, slices of country bread with smoked bacon, medieval soup and tartes flambées fill stomachs between two shows.

In the tankard, cervoise (the medieval ancestor of beer) and a spiced medieval elixir, a cousin of hypocras, take top billing. Mulled wine and apple juice pressed on site round things off for more sensible palates. Everything comes from regional producers, as the market rules require.

One tip worth its weight in gold: arrive at opening time. The crowds build up sharply in the afternoon, to the point where the Grand’Rue becomes hard to get through. In the morning, you enjoy the stalls, the smell of roasting boar and the first performances in ideal conditions. Leave the car at the park-and-ride, as the centre is sealed off for the whole duration of the market.

Ribeauvillé pairs well with its neighbours on the Wine Route: Riquewihr is a few minutes’ drive away, Kaysersberg and its authentic market lie a little further south, and Colmar makes the perfect base for exploring the area. Over a December weekend, stringing the four together makes one of the loveliest Christmas itineraries in Alsace.

Our tip

Arrive at opening time, around 10am: the crowds get very dense in the afternoon. Leave the car at the park-and-ride or take the shuttle from Colmar, as the centre is sealed off during the market.
