The flavours that make this market what it is

Food and craft stalls on the square; mulled wine

Glühwäin

offered free on opening night in 2025.

In the south of the Grand Duchy, in the Red Lands mining basin, the Esch-sur-Alzette Christmas market takes over the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville every winter. The Escher Krëschtmoart, its Luxembourgish name, is organised by the City: food and craft stalls around the town hall, concerts at the weekend, a St Nicholas parade and free entry. From the Moselle department, it is an afternoon outing. Thionville is half an hour’s drive away, and a CFL line links Esch to Audun-le-Tiche, on the French side, with no connection to the SNCF network.

The Esch-sur-Alzette Christmas market on the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville

In 2025, the City counted 24 food and craft stalls on the square, five of them new according to L’essentiel. The scale remains modest, and the City owns it: alderman Pim Knaff, quoted by the same newspaper, describes it as “a very local market” and points out that “there is no very long tradition of a Christmas market in Esch-sur-Alzette”. The Place de l’Hôtel de Ville concentrates everything on a single site, which makes the visit easy to fit in between two errands.

The setting has already taken different forms from one year to the next. In 2022, the market had a Glühwein pyramid with 50 seats and around a hundred standing places, according to Le Quotidien. The principle stays the same from one edition to the next: a few weeks of chalets on the square, lively weekend evenings and a fixed date for children around St Nicholas.

St Nicholas, concerts and free mulled wine on opening night

The official opening of 2025 took place on Friday 14 November at 7pm, with free mulled wine from 7pm to 8.30pm. After that, the City schedules concerts and entertainment every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until closing. The highlight for families is the St Nicholas parade through the streets of Esch: on Sunday 30 November in 2025, at 2.30pm according to L’essentiel, with sweets and chocolates handed out.

In the glass, Glühwäin, the Luxembourgish name for mulled wine, holds the counters. If you want to know what sets it apart from the Alsatian or Nordic recipes, the article on mulled wine and its variants covers the question.

Dates and opening hours: what the 2025 edition tells us

The 2026 dates have not yet been published. In 2025, the market was open from Friday 14 November to Sunday 21 December, in other words a mid-November opening, ahead of the country’s other markets according to L’essentiel. The City’s agenda (citylife.esch.lu) and the Visit Luxembourg listing will give the dates of the next edition; the Esch tourist office also answers on +352 54 16 37.

The last opening hours published in detail date from 2022: Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 8pm, Friday and Saturday from 12pm to 10pm. They give the order of magnitude, to be checked for 2026.

  • Where: Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, L-4138 Esch-sur-Alzette, on a single site.
  • When: 2026 dates to be confirmed; in 2025, from 14 November to 21 December.
  • How much: free entry.
  • Opening hours: to be confirmed; in 2022, 12pm to 8pm from Sunday to Thursday, until 10pm on Friday and Saturday.
  • Note: Esch-sur-Alzette is the town in the south of the country, linked by a CFL line to Audun-le-Tiche; Esch-sur-Sûre is a village in the Luxembourg Ardennes, unrelated to this market.

Getting to Esch-sur-Alzette from France

By train, the gateway is Luxembourg station, served by the Paris, Metz, Thionville, Luxembourg TGVs. From there, CFL line 60 serves Esch-sur-Alzette towards the Red Lands. At the border, Audun-le-Tiche, in France, is the terminus of a CFL line that runs to Esch; its station has no SNCF trains, so you get there by car or bus. From the Moselle department, the simplest rail journey is a TER from Metz to Luxembourg and then a CFL connection to Esch, with timetables on mobiliteit.lu. Public transport has been free throughout Luxembourg since 29 February 2020, bus, train and tram included, with no ticket to buy: only the French section is paid for.

By car, allow about 3h54 from Paris (339 km, without traffic), 49 minutes from Metz (62 km) and 29 minutes from Thionville (36 km). The train avoids the parking question and needs no ticket once you are over the border.

Esch, Differdange and Luxembourg City in the same weekend

Line 60 links Esch to the Luxembourg Christmas market, the country’s big event on the squares of the capital. In the Red Lands basin, the Differdange Christmas market, on the same line 60, plays a different tune with its ice rink and carousel. On the French side, the Thionville Christmas market is on the way home, and Metz completes the programme for those coming from further away. One day is enough for two markets, helped by the Grand Duchy’s free trains.

Our tip

Choose a Friday or Saturday at the end of the day: the concerts and entertainment are concentrated at the weekend, and the market closed at 10pm on those evenings in 2022, the last edition whose opening hours were published.
