The flavours that make this market what it is

Traditional Christmas dishes and drinks prepared by the town’s clubs and associations; gift ideas at the chalets

About twenty minutes from Thionville, on the other side of the border, the Dudelange Christmas market is spread across three squares of the town centre in 2026. The traditional Christmas market occupies the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville and the medieval Christmas market the Place Kinnen, both from Friday 11 to Sunday 20 December 2026; a winter market precedes them on the Place Am Duerf from 28 November. The chalets are run by clubs, associations and residents, which gives the whole thing the feel of a town celebration, with Saint Nicholas arriving on 29 November to open the season.

Two squares for the Dudelange Christmas market

On the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, the town sets up the typical chalets of the traditional market: gift ideas, Christmas dishes and drinks. What sets it apart is who runs them. The stalls are entrusted to the clubs, associations and citizens of Dudelange, and the municipality says so itself: the market exists thanks to their commitment. So it is the local societies that run the kitchen and the counter.

The Place Kinnen hosts the medieval Christmas market on the same dates. The town promises the atmosphere of a medieval village, with a campfire in the middle of the stalls and an old-fashioned carousel for the children. The two markets share the same opening hours, so you can go from one to the other in the same evening.

The winter market on the Place Am Duerf and the arrival of Saint Nicholas

The season starts earlier on the Place Am Duerf. The winter market (Wintermarkt) opens there from Saturday 28 November to Sunday 20 December 2026: every day from 2pm to 7pm until 10 December, then at the Christmas market hours from 11 December, when the three squares run together. Its size is not published by the town.

On Sunday 29 November 2026, from 2.30pm to 5pm, “St Nicholas arrives in Dudelange” in the town centre, according to the municipal calendar. The event falls a dozen days before the chalets open on the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville.

2026 opening hours: chalets that open in the late afternoon

From Monday to Thursday, the Christmas markets open from 4pm to 8pm; on Fridays from 4pm to 9pm, with the option for the chalets to stay open until midnight; on Saturdays from 2pm to 9pm and on Sundays from 2pm to 8pm. A morning visit is not possible on weekdays, and the afternoon only starts at 2pm at weekends.

The chalets serve traditional Christmas dishes and drinks. To compare Luxembourg’s Glühwäin with the German and Alsatian versions, read mulled wine and its variants before ordering.

Getting to Dudelange from France

Dudelange can be reached by train without going through the capital. Dudelange-Ville station is the second on the branch line that runs from Bettembourg to Volmerange-les-Mines (CFL line 60A). Volmerange-les-Mines, on the French side, is the terminus of this line, which serves Dudelange with no change; its station is not connected to the SNCF network, but the Citéline S10 bus links it to Thionville, Yutz and Hettange-Grande. From the Moselle, the other option is a TER Metz-Luxembourg to Bettembourg, then the CFL connection, with timetables on mobiliteit.lu. From Paris or Metz, the TGVs serve Luxembourg station, from where line 60A reaches Dudelange-Centre or Dudelange-Ville. Dudelange-Centre is the closest station to the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, about a 5-minute walk away; Dudelange-Ville is about 8 minutes away.

Locally, the town lists buses 5, 8, 9, 10, 631, 651 and the DudBus1, as well as Vël’Ok shared bikes at the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville and at the station, with bike parking on the Place Am Duerf and Avenue Grande-Duchesse Charlotte. All public transport in Luxembourg has been free since 29 February 2020, with no ticket needed.

By car, allow about 21 minutes from Thionville (22 km), 42 minutes from Metz (49 km) and 3h51 from Paris (345 km), without traffic.

Dudelange, Thionville and Luxembourg City

The Thionville Christmas market is the direct French neighbour, less than half an hour away. The Luxembourg Christmas market can be reached on line 60A for a day in the capital, and the Esch-sur-Alzette Christmas market occupies another Place de l’Hôtel de Ville in the Terres Rouges mining basin. Dudelange’s late weekday hours leave the day free for another market before coming back to dine at the chalets.

Our tip

Come on Saturday or Sunday if you are crossing the border for the day: the three squares open at 2pm on those days, whereas on weekdays the chalets only open at 4pm.
