The oldest Barcelona Christmas market, the Fira de Santa Llúcia, sets up in front of the cathedral, on the avinguda de la Catedral and the Pla de la Seu, in the heart of the Barri Gòtic. The Associació Fira de Santa Llúcia organises it with the Ciutat Vella district, and the first known mention of the fair dates from 1786. In 2025, the 239th edition gathered 215 stalls from 28 November to 23 December, every day from 10am to 9pm, with free entry. The 2026 dates had not been published as of 12 October 2026. You come for nativity figurines, a caganer or a tió rather than for mulled wine: the fair has stayed true to its origins as a market for nativity scenes and decorations.

2026 dates and opening hours of the Fira de Santa Llúcia

The City says its Nadal website will be updated around November 2026: no 2026 date had been published as of 12 October. The fair’s rule is well known. The stalls go up in late November or early December, always before 13 December, St Lucy’s Day, and stay until Christmas.

In 2025, the market opened on 28 November and closed on 23 December, every day from 10am to 9pm, public holidays and the eve of holidays included.

215 stalls in four sections

The Ciutat Vella district counted 215 stalls in 2025: 91 for Christmas trees, moss, tiós and Christmas plants, 90 for nativity scenes and figurines, 34 for crafts. The association, for its part, speaks of 180 pitches strictly devoted to Christmas and 35 craft pitches, the same total. More than two hundred stalls: the fair falls into this guide’s giant market category.

The association divides its stalls into four sections. Nativity scenes and figurines: grottoes, characters, lights, baubles and candles. Greenery: natural or artificial trees, moss, tiós of every size, cork, small good-luck bouquets (the ramets de la sort) and eucalyptus branches. Crafts: clothing, jewellery, decoration. The last section sells simbombes, the traditional instrument, and tambourines. In 2025, the City also mentioned caganers in the likeness of current celebrities, and the fair unveiled a tree of more than 14 metres.

Caganer, tió and Carassa: the fair’s Catalan traditions

Two figures dominate the stalls. The tió is a log that children feed from 8 December, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, and which “makes” the presents on Christmas Eve when beaten with sticks. The caganer belongs to the nativity scenes of Catalonia and the Valencian Country; it was born in the Baroque era and is considered a good-luck charm.

The fair is named after St Lucy, patron saint of seamstresses and, according to the organiser, “advocate of eyesight”. It was long nicknamed “la fira de les noies”, the girls’ fair. In 2025, the programme included a Tió gegant for under-12s, twelve days between 5 and 20 December, in the morning or the afternoon depending on the day; the association then counted 32 years of this activity and more than 445,000 children who had come to make the tió “poop” since it began. On Saturday 13 December 2025, the 32nd Diada de les Tradicions i Costums Nadalencs filled the Pla de la Catedral all day long. The Carassa de Nadal, a procession that hands out sweets, came out on 29 and 30 November, 13 and 14 December, then 20 and 21 December.

Barcelona’s other Christmas markets

The Fira de Nadal de la Sagrada Família has been held since 1962 on the plaça de la Sagrada Família, in the Eixample. The City now counts around a hundred stalls in four sections: Christmas trees, nativity scenes and figurines including the caganer, food, gifts. The Associació d’Artesans i Firaires Nadalencs de la Sagrada Família organises it. According to the local television channel betevé, the 2025 edition ran from 22 November to 23 December; the 2026 dates had not been published as of 12 October.

Three other events rounded off the 2025-2026 season, according to the City and betevé. Nadal al Port, at the Moll de la Fusta, from 28 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, from 11am to 11pm, free entry: seventh edition, Ferris wheel, synthetic ice rink and chalets. The Fira de Reis, on the Gran Via between carrer Rocafort and carrer Muntaner, from 18 December to 6 January: toys before the night of the Kings. The Fira de Consum Responsable, plaça de Catalunya, from 19 to 30 December 2025, from 11am to 8:30pm, closed on 25 and 26 December, for its eleventh edition. The Cavalcada de Reis parades through the streets of the centre on 5 January from 6pm, according to the City’s programme for January 2026.

Getting to the Barcelona Christmas market

The fair stands in front of the cathedral, in the Barri Gòtic. The association lists the metro stations Jaume I, Catalunya, Urquinaona and Liceu, buses 17, 19, 40, 45 and 120, and a Bicing station in front of numbers 4 to 6 of the avinguda de la Catedral.

From France, check SNCF and Renfe timetables before you book. The rail press reports a direct Lyon-Barcelona AVE, one a day in each direction. The city’s airport is Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat. Between Madrid and Barcelona, Turespaña gives around two and a half hours by AVE.

Our tip

The 2026 dates will appear around November on the City’s Nadal website and on the association’s: reread them before you book. In 2025, the Tió gegant welcomed children under 12 on twelve days between 5 and 20 December and the Carassa de Nadal came out on three weekends; if you are coming as a family, look out for these events in the 2026 programme.
