On the banks of the Canal de la Robine, the Promenade des Barques fills with wooden chalets from late November, and Narbonne Christmas market becomes the heart of the festive season in this ancient Roman city. The Féeries de Noël bring the whole historic centre to life for more than a month: Cours Mirabeau, Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and the canal banks fill up with lights, the smell of mulled wine and skaters on the ice rink. You wander between Gothic facades, look up at Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur cathedral, and winter in Languedoc takes on a fairy-tale feel.

A stroll along the canal, in the heart of the Roman city

The chalets line the Promenade des Barques, the tree-lined walk that follows the Canal de la Robine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an extension of the Canal du Midi. Water on one side, plane trees on the other, garlands reflected at dusk: the setting speaks for itself. You move from stall to stall chatting with the makers, taste as you go, and leave with a bag of nougat or a bottle of La Clape wine.

A few steps away, the Pont des Marchands spans the canal with houses built right on top of it, a direct legacy of Roman times, when the Via Domitia ran through the town. Narbonne has a rare mix of ancient stone and festive spirit: remains of the Roman road are exposed on Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, the Horreum still has its underground galleries from the first century, and the Archbishops' Palace crowns it all with eight centuries of stone. Walking here in December means strolling through a town where mulled wine sits on top of two thousand years of history.

Specialities of the Aude: from the sea to the garrigue

Narbonne Christmas market celebrates the generous cooking of Languedoc, drawing on both the coastal lagoons and the scrubland hills. Oysters from Gruissan and Leucate sit alongside brandade, Aude-style cassoulet and cured meats. You'll also find the produce that defines the area: olive oil and olives, Corbières honey, nougat and, of course, wines from La Clape and Corbières, presented in person by the winegrowers.

  • Gruissan and Leucate oysters: eaten on the spot facing the canal, they make a fine festive aperitif.
  • Brandade and cassoulet: the comfort dishes of the Aude, to take away hot in the December cold.
  • Mulled wine and Corbières wines: local winegrowers run their own stalls; to keep the mood going at home, a homemade mulled wine recipe always goes down well.
  • Nougat, honey and olives: sweet treats and garrigue produce, easy to slip into a gift hamper.
  • Local olive oil: a source of pride in the Corbières, often offered for tasting by the producers.

Ice rink, Ferris wheel and projection mapping: the highlights

The Féeries de Noël go well beyond the chalets. An ice rink sets up right next to the market on the Promenade des Barques, open every day for young and old. On Cours Mirabeau, the funfair and its Ferris wheel give a panoramic view over the illuminated town, a big hit with children. The evening highlight is the projection mapping show, free and projected onto one of the centre's landmark facades: Art Nouveau scenery, an animated Christmas tale and 3D effects for about ten minutes of magic, repeated several times each evening.

Narbonne Christmas market and its entertainment run from late November to early January. The exact dates and opening hours for 2026 are still to be confirmed by the town, but the usual schedule lasts over a month, including the school holidays. The JDS listings site gives the Féeries de Noël as running from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, still to be confirmed by the town (checked on 10/09/2026). Most of the entertainment is free; only the ice rink and the funfair rides charge. As for getting there, Narbonne station is less than ten minutes' walk from the Promenade des Barques, which makes the train very convenient from Toulouse, Montpellier or the coast. By car, several car parks surround the historic centre; weekdays are best, as spaces fill up quickly at weekends.

What to see around Narbonne Christmas market

A visit to the market goes well with a walk through the medieval centre. Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur cathedral, never finished, impresses with one of the tallest choirs in France. The Archbishops' Palace and its historic rooms, Narbonne's covered market hall for a lunch of fresh produce, and a walk along the canal round off the day. Want to go further into the Aude and Occitanie? Other nearby towns are worth a visit at the same time of year: Carcassonne Christmas market and its medieval citadel, Béziers Christmas market just down the road, or Perpignan Christmas market for a Catalan-flavoured getaway.

Our tip

Come in the late afternoon to take in the market, a spin on the ice rink and the evening projection show, then carry on with a walk along the canal to Saint-Just cathedral.
