The flavours that make this market what it is

The Neuf-Brisach Christmas market takes the form of a reconstructed village from the year 1700, set in the heart of the fortress town designed by Vauban. From Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December 2026, the second weekend of December, exhibitors and performers in period costume bring daily life of the era back: straw-strewn ground, the smell of wood fires, wild boar on the spit and demonstrations of old trades. The event is also known as Marché de Noël 1700, village 1700 or Marché de Noël d’antan.

Christmas in Vauban’s day

The setting makes the difference. The exhibitors’ huts are built in keeping with tradition, the performers wear late 17th-century dress and the town’s star-shaped ramparts enclose the village. You move from hut to hut between stalls of local crafts, Christmas decorations and regional produce, with a living nativity scene, farm animals and a storyteller for the children.

To warm up, mulled wine and hot chocolate are served on site. For those with a sweet tooth, there are bredele biscuits baked in front of you, the baker’s bread fresh from the oven, tartes flambées and hot apple juice pressed before your eyes. The seasonal recipes are in our article on mulled wine and its variations.

Old trades demonstrated live

The craftspeople present explain their techniques and work in front of you. Among the trades announced for 2026:

  • The blacksmith and the art blacksmith.
  • The baker, the brewer and the cheesemaker.
  • The wool spinner, the upholsterer and the basket maker.
  • The ceramicist, the woodturner and the rope maker.
  • The beekeeper, the herbalist and the apple presser.
  • The clockmaker, the knife grinder and the log borer.

Seventeen trades in all, which puts this visit closer to a historical re-enactment than to a classic market of chalets. Allow time to watch the blacksmith or the basket maker at work, children linger there for a long while.

Getting to Neuf-Brisach: the Christmas shuttle from Colmar

On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December, Christmas shuttle line 5 links Colmar station to Neuf-Brisach. The day ticket costs €17 per person, €10 with the discovery fare, and children under 12 travel free with a reserved ticket. Sales are online only, from Thursday 12 November 2026 at 12 noon, with a limited number of seats. Line 5 does not run on Friday 11 December.

Neuf-Brisach lies on the Rhine plain, east of Colmar, away from the hillsides of the wine route. The same weekend, Colmar Christmas market is open every day, Eguisheim’s too, and Rouffach holds its second weekend on 12 and 13 December. A Saturday in Neuf-Brisach by shuttle, a Sunday in Rouffach or Eguisheim: the programme fits into a weekend from a base in Colmar.

Our tip

Book shuttle line 5 as soon as sales open, on 12 November at 12 noon: seats are limited and it only runs on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December.
