Place Stanislas, the UNESCO showcase

It is hard to find a more spectacular setting for the festive season. Place Stanislas, an 18th-century architectural ensemble on the UNESCO list, is the showcase of the Fêtes de Saint-Nicolas, from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027: between Jean Lamour’s gilded railings and its monumental fountains, it hosts the video mapping on the town hall façade and the arrival of the grand parade, while the villages of chalets set up on the neighbouring squares. When the lights come on around 5pm, the effect is striking: the golden stone takes on a warm glow, the façades are mirrored in the Neptune fountain, and the neighbouring villages almost fade before the grandeur of the setting.

According to the 2025 programme (the 2026 details are not out yet), the Grand Village de Saint-Nicolas and its sixty chalets occupy Place Charles III; Place de la Carrière hosts the ice rink, the Ferris wheel at the foot of the Arc Héré and the Village du Gouverneur, in front of the Palais du Gouvernement; Place Vaudémont has a gourmet hamlet of eight chalets. A sensible size for big festivities, which avoids that tourist-factory feeling.

Saint Nicholas, Lorraine's national holiday

6 December is a sacred date in Nancy. Saint Nicholas, patron saint of Lorraine, parades through the city with Père Fouettard: in 2026, the grand parade takes place on Saturday 5 December, on the theme “Légendes & Chimères”. In 2025, it set off at 5.30pm with seventeen floats built by local councils and associations, and ended on Place Stanislas with the mayor handing over the keys to the city, the video mapping and a firework display. One hundred and thirty thousand spectators in 2025.

On Place Vaudémont, a gourmet hamlet of eight chalets (run in 2025 by the association “Le grenier de Callot”) completes the villages, a stone’s throw from Place Stanislas.

Lorraine specialities to taste

Local food is well represented. The bergamote de Nancy, a translucent boiled sweet created in 1850 by the city's confectioners, is Nancy's signature treat. Expect €5 to €8 a tin. Macarons de Nancy (a recipe inherited from 17th-century nuns) are sold at the Maison des Sœurs Macarons and on the market in a seasonal edition. Pâté lorrain, made with meat marinated in white wine, goes very well with mulled wine.

To take home, mirabelle plum is the obvious choice: eau-de-vie (expect €25 to €40 a bottle), jam, syrup, sugared sweets. Producers from the Côtes de Meuse are on site several weekends.

The video mapping on the town hall

Every evening for the whole of the festivities, the façade of the town hall on Place Stanislas turns into a giant screen for a free video mapping show. In 2025, it retold the legend of Saint Nicholas in seven scenes; for 2026, the tourist office promises a playful, contemporary mapping. The show changes every year. Arrive a little early to get a good spot.

Our tip

If you can, come for Saint Nicholas weekend (5-6 December). The parade on the evening of Saturday the 5th is unlike anything else in France, free and open to all. Otherwise, on weekdays between 8 and 18 December the atmosphere is still magical and hotels have rooms. The video mapping on the town hall façade, Place Stanislas, is worth the trip on its own.
