The Good Lord's Lantern in its Christmas finery

Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Metz has the largest expanse of Gothic stained glass in the world: 6,500 m², including works by Chagall. In December, when the outdoor illuminations play off the windows lit from inside, the effect is spectacular. It is surely one of the finest natural backdrops any Christmas market could ask for.

The pyramid and the Saint Nicholas village

On Place de la République, a giant German-style Christmas pyramid stands among the chalets. It is the market's landmark, visible from a long way off. In Lorraine it is Saint Nicholas who brings the presents, on 6 December, and Metz celebrates the tradition with a dedicated village and a parade through the streets.

The lantern trail

A Metz invention that has become a fixture, the lantern trail is a poetic, illuminated walk along the Moselle. Interactive art installations tell Christmas stories. It is free, open every evening, and children enjoy it as much as adults. The route links the city centre to the lake in a 40-minute walk.

Eating in Metz

The mirabelle plum is the local star. You will find it as a liqueur, in a tart, in jam, and even in a special “mirabelle” mulled wine. Authentic quiche lorraine (no Gruyère, made with migaine, the egg and cream custard) is served at several chalets, as is pâté lorrain in its pastry crust. Boulay macarons, crisp outside and soft inside, make a perfect edible gift.

Our tip

The lantern trail is a magical walk along the Moselle, perfect with children. It links the city centre to the lake by way of interactive light installations. Allow 40 minutes on foot. Bring warm gloves, the quays are exposed to the wind.
