In Govone, a Roero village perched among the vines, the Christmas market wraps around a royal castle. The Magico Paese di Natale, the “magical land of Christmas”, returns from 14 November to 20 December 2026 for its twentieth edition: more than 50 chalets along the avenue that circles the Savoy castle, a Christmas exhibition in the state rooms of the piano nobile, Santa’s house and an elf school. Govone Christmas market is a weekend visit, an hour from Turin by motorway, and it is aimed first at families: the children have their own programme, the parents have the hazelnuts, the Roero wines and the view over the hills.

Govone Christmas market around the royal castle

The village is small, and everything happens on the castle hill. The wooden chalets, more than 50 according to the organiser, line the avenue that goes round the Castello Reale, with a mix of crafts, food and street food. Entry to the market is free, with no booking. The rest of the programme is paying and must be booked: the Christmas tour of the castle, Santa’s house, the elf school, the shows. It is a different model from the big city markets, closer to a seasonal theme park set in a real village, and worth knowing before you come with children who will want to do everything.

The castle tour, named “Un viaggio nel tempo… e nel cuore del Natale” in 2025, lasts around 25 minutes through the decorated rooms of the noble floor, with QR-code panels for the explanations. In 2026, the full-price ticket is €8 from age 10, €5 for ages 6 to 9, free under 6, and tickets can be neither changed nor refunded. Access is free for people with disabilities on presentation of their card, but the castle has stairs and a steep climb, as the organiser itself points out.

The land of Christmas also extends to Asti and San Damiano

For a few editions now, the Magico Paese di Natale has spilled out beyond Govone. In Asti, around twenty kilometres away, a Christmas market fills the town centre over the same weeks, with wider weekday opening. In San Damiano d’Asti, a living nativity takes place on a few dates in December. The three sites share ticketing and communication, but Govone remains the heart, with the castle and the chalets. The organiser says the markets open at weekends and, as the holidays approach, on weekdays, with hours specified as the season goes on.

In 2025, the Govone chalets were open from 10am to 6.45pm on 15 and 16, 22 and 23, 29 and 30 November, then on 6, 7 and 8, 13 and 14, 20 and 21 December. For 2026, the market’s page announces Saturdays and Sundays from 14 November to 20 December, plus Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December, from 10am to 7pm. 8 December is a public holiday in Italy (the Immaculate Conception), and that long weekend is the busiest of the season.

Hazelnuts, Roero wines and vin brulé

The Roero is a land of vines and hazelnut groves, between the Tanaro and the hills of Asti. The food chalets draw their produce from it: Piedmont hazelnuts in every form, as paste, cake and chocolate, the red wines of Roero and white Roero Arneis, cured meats and cheeses from the hills, biscuits and Christmas pastries. Vin brulé is served by the cup along the castle avenue, and you will find the white version too. To place this Piedmontese vin brulé among its cousins, read mulled wine and its variations. Alba, the capital of the Langhe and of the white truffle, is a few kilometres away, and its white truffle fair is held in the autumn: the Govone stalls keep traces of it, at prices that remain truffle prices.

Street food has its place alongside the produce to take home: hot dishes eaten standing up, cured-meat sandwiches, crêpes and churros for children coming out of the elf school. The market does not publish a precise list of exhibitors, so what you will find varies from one year to the next; what does not change is the sloping avenue around the castle and the view over the vines below.

Practical info and getting there from France

  • Where: avenue of the Castello Reale, piazza Roma, Govone, province of Cuneo, in the Roero.
  • When: from 14 November to 20 December 2026, Saturdays and Sundays, plus 7 and 8 December, from 10am to 7pm for the market.
  • How much: market free; Christmas tour of the castle €8 (€5 for ages 6 to 9, free under 6); Santa’s house, elf school and shows paying, to be booked online.
  • Parking: school car park 20 minutes’ walk away, Produttori car park 10 minutes away, industrial estate with a paying shuttle (€1 per person from age 5, return) at weekends and on 7 and 8 December.
  • Nearby: Turin Christmas market an hour’s drive away, Aosta Christmas market for anyone heading back down towards Mont Blanc, and Santa Maria Maggiore in the Val Vigezzo.

Govone has no station. The rail access point is Asti, on the Turin-Genoa line, 20 km away; from there, an organiser’s shuttle runs at weekends (€3.70 per journey in 2025, ticket sold on board) and the Giachino company runs coaches whose 2026 timetable was still being updated at the start of autumn. From France, take the direct TGV or Frecciarossa Paris-Turin via the Maurienne, back in service since spring 2025 with three TGV and two Frecciarossa trains a day, then a regional train from Turin Porta Nuova to Asti. From Lyon or Chambéry, the same direct trains stop on the way.

By car, you arrive on the A21 Turin-Piacenza as far as Asti, then the A33 Asti-Cuneo, half an hour from Govone according to the organiser. From France, Fréjus tunnel (toll) then A32 and the Turin ring road, or Mont Blanc tunnel then A5 and Turin; from Nice, via Ventimiglia and the Riviera motorway. Allow half a day from Lyon or Nice, a full day from Paris. The historic centre is paved with cobbles and the climb to the castle is steep: according to the organiser, the inside of the market, Santa’s house and the elf school is step-free, but the cobbled climb leading to the castle and Santa’s house remains difficult in a wheelchair as with a pushchair, and the castle itself has stairs.

Govone in December: a Savoy castle among the vines

Govone Castle was one of the residences of the House of Savoy from 1792 to 1870 and has been part of the “Residences of the Royal House of Savoy” World Heritage site since 1997. The Solaro counts had entrusted its enlargement to Guarino Guarini at the end of the 17th century; Benedetto Alfieri took up the drawings a century later, and King Charles Felix had it restored at the start of the 19th century, Italian gardens included. Jean-Jacques Rousseau stayed here in 1730, as a young servant of Count Ottavio Solaro, and tells the story in the Confessions. Inside, the two-flight grand staircase, decorated with telamons brought from the gardens of the Venaria, the rooms hung with Chinese wallpaper and the ballroom painted in trompe-l’œil on the theme of Niobe form the setting for the Christmas exhibition.

The castle has belonged to the municipality since the end of the 19th century and serves as its town hall. It is part of the Castelli Doc circuit, eight castles of the Langhe and Roero along with Grinzane Cavour, Barolo and Serralunga d’Alba, which gives ideas for the rest of the weekend: a night in Alba, lunch in Barolo, a cellar in the Roero. Govone Christmas market 2026 is thus worth it for its setting as much as for its chalets, a royal castle on a hill of vines, within reach of Turin, where the children have their school and the adults their glass of Roero.

Our tip

Buy the castle and activity tickets online before you leave, they cannot be changed, and arrive at 10am on a Saturday in November to do the avenue of chalets before the 8 December crowds
