Rennes Christmas market runs on two fronts: a row of wooden chalets along the Mail François-Mitterrand and a Christmas village set up at the foot of the Parliament of Brittany. Between the two, a trail of lights winds through the historic centre, past half-timbered façades and cobbled streets. The Breton capital plays up its identity as a foodie, student city: salted butter caramel instead of pretzels, local makers and illuminations staged like an open-air show.

Two sites, two moods

The Mail François-Mitterrand hosts the main market: around forty wooden chalets lined up under the trees, a short walk from Place de Bretagne. You will find festive decorations, jewellery, toys, crafts and something to nibble at any hour. The Ferris wheel standing nearby can be spotted from Place de la République, which is handy for getting your bearings in the centre.

On Place du Parlement de Bretagne, the Christmas village plays the heritage card: food chalets, local makers and a giant 13-metre tree facing one of the finest façades in the city. Children post their letters to Father Christmas in a dedicated box, and every letter gets a reply.

Around these two hubs, the Hiver à Rennes programme adds a winter funfair of 80 rides on the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle and monumental projections on the town hall towards the end of the season.

Rennes Christmas market dates and opening hours

The 2026 edition has not been officially announced yet. Reliable pointers, based on 2025: the Mail market ran from 21 November to 31 December, the Parliament village from 29 November to 4 January. Expect the same window for 2026, from late November to the first days of January, and check the dates on the tourist office website before booking your weekend.

Site 2025 dates (as a guide) Opening hours
Mail François-Mitterrand market 21 November to 31 December 10.30am-8pm (Sun-Thu), 10.30am-10pm (Fri-Sat)
Parliament Christmas village 29 November to 4 January 12pm-9pm daily
Makers' market, Place Hoche 24 November to 23 December see programme

The Mail closes early, at 7pm, on 24 and 31 December. The Friday and Saturday late openings, until 10pm, remain the best slot for enjoying the lights.

What to eat, what to bring home

Brittany takes over the plates: galettes, crêpes and salted butter caramel, plus mulled wine and hot chocolate to keep the cold at bay. The Mail chalets alternate between treats and gift ideas, while the makers' market on Place Hoche gathers around fifty exhibitors selling gifts made in the region: jewellery, ceramics, illustrations, candles.

A route that works well: start at the Parliament village in the late afternoon, follow the trail of lights up towards Saint-Germain and the Champ-Jacquet, then finish on the Mail after dark, when the Ferris wheel lights up.

Getting there, budget and markets to combine

Entry to the markets is free. By metro, get off at République, Sainte-Anne or Saint-Germain: the three stations frame the Christmas trail. From Rennes station, the Mail is a short quarter of an hour on foot. If you are driving, aim for the metro park-and-ride car parks rather than the city centre, which is saturated on December weekends. Allow around €20 per person for snacks on site and a souvenir to take home.

If you are touring the markets of western France, Nantes Christmas market is just over an hour away by train. Those of Tours and Rouen round off a circuit between the Loire Valley and Normandy nicely.

Our tip

Start at the Parliament village in the late afternoon, follow the trail of lights to the Mail and hop on the Ferris wheel after dark. A weekday evening is far calmer than a Saturday in December.
