On Place de la République, right in the middle of Châteauroux, the wooden chalets light up in the first days of December and set the festive tone for the Berry. The Châteauroux Christmas market is held on this large square lined with old buildings, a short walk from the pedestrian shopping streets. People come to wander between the stalls of artisans and small producers, a cup of mulled wine in hand, under the strings of lights and the tall illuminated tree that watches over George Sand's home town.
A stroll on Place de la République
The setting is that of a Berry county-town square, wide and lined with old buildings: the République wraps around the market, and the rows of chalets wind between craft stalls and food huts. The mood shifts from one day to the next. On weekdays you take your time between two stalls; on Friday and Saturday evenings, the late openings stretch the visit into the early part of the night, when the lights come into their own.
What makes the walk enjoyable is how close you get to the makers. You can chat with the person who made a piece of jewellery, ask a producer where his cheeses come from, and leave with a gift idea that has a story behind it. The conversations are often worth as much as the purchase: a cooking tip from a lentil grower, the origin of a soap, the way a goat's cheese is aged. Children get their share of the programme: visits from Santa for photo sessions, mascots and musicians walking the aisles on some afternoons. Balloon modellers and face-painting workshops round things off depending on the day.
The tour is soon done, without feeling anonymous for all that. You go back to a stall you spotted earlier, you pass the same faces twice. This is a market where you take your time, and that is exactly what makes it warm when night falls early and the lights take over from daylight.
Berry treats at the Châteauroux Christmas market
The Berry has a real festive table, and the Châteauroux Christmas market puts it centre stage. The food huts play the local card, between hot dishes to eat there and produce to take home for Christmas Eve. This is the moment to stock up on specialities from the region: lentils, PDO goat's cheeses, chicken en barbouille.
- Berry green lentils: the region's emblematic pulse, ideal as a side dish or in a warm salad, often sold by the growers themselves.
- Goat's cheeses: pyramid-shaped Valençay and slim, tapered Pouligny-Saint-Pierre, two local PDO cheeses that earn their place on a festive cheeseboard.
- Chicken en barbouille and potato galette: hearty Berry cooking, to eat hot on the spot when a caterer has it on the menu.
- Shortbread and small sweet things for teatime, to nibble while walking between the chalets.
- Steaming mulled wine, and sometimes wines from Reuilly and Quincy, two Berry appellations, if you want to take a festive bottle home.
To keep the festive mood going once you are back, a homemade mulled wine recipe takes only a few minutes with simple spices. Enough to bring the smell of the market into your own kitchen.
Ice rink, entertainment and opening hours
The market does not stand alone: it belongs to the “Noël à Châteauroux” programme that livens up the whole centre. An ice rink is set up not far away, on Place Madeleine Renaud et Jean-Louis Barrault, and runs for a good part of December. Entry to the market is free; the rink is not. Around it you come across street shows, roaming musicians and horse-drawn carriage rides on some days.
As for opening hours, the market usually runs from 11am to 7pm on weekdays, with late openings on Friday and Saturday evenings. The exact dates for the 2026 edition still have to be confirmed by the Châteauroux Berry Tourisme tourist office, but the market traditionally opens around the first weekend of December and runs until the 24th. Best to check the official programme before setting a date for your visit.
What to see around Châteauroux
Châteauroux is George Sand country, in the Indre valley. The novelist spent part of her life at Nohant, close by, and the Berry runs through all her work. The town keeps fine traces of its past, starting with the Couvent des Cordeliers, a former convent turned cultural venue that hosts exhibitions and events through the year. The old centre lends itself to a walk before or after the market, between shops, pedestrian streets and old façades. The banks of the Indre are a pleasant breather too, weather permitting.
If you are touring the region, several markets are worth the trip within an hour and a half. The Bourges Christmas market takes you into a medieval city with dense heritage and its listed cathedral. To the west, the Tours Christmas market spreads its chalets through a large city on the Loire, and the Blois Christmas market enjoys the setting of its royal château. Enough to put together a festive weekend between the Berry and the Loire Valley.
Our tip
Follow the market with a tour of the old centre and the Couvent des Cordeliers, then pick up a bottle of Reuilly or Quincy for Christmas Eve.
