Christmas markets in Pays de la Loire
Nantes and its region offer creative, offbeat markets, much like the city itself. Nantes Christmas market, on Place Royale and Place du Commerce, is one of the largest in western France.

Christmas traditions
Nantes is known for Le Voyage à Nantes, and that creative spirit carries into the Christmas markets with art installations and original exhibitions.
Between the Loire and the Atlantic, the Pays de la Loire do Christmas with elegance, mixing Loire heritage, Angevin gentleness and the energy of Nantes. Illuminated châteaux, Muscadet vineyards, refined food: the region offers a less touristy take, deeply rooted in local culture.
The signature markets
The Nantes market, on Place Royale and Place du Commerce, is the biggest. Close to 140 exhibitors, Father Christmas’s illuminated house on Place Royale and free workshops for children. Le Voyage à Nantes adds contemporary art installations during the season. Angers hosts an elegant market on Place du Ralliement, with pale-wood chalets and understated lights. Le Mans and La Roche-sur-Yon round off the regional offer.
Specialities to try
The region champions its Loire cooking. Rillettes from Le Mans, fouée (a small hollow bread you stuff), gâteau nantais with almonds and rum, bottereaux (fritters), fouace from Nantes. On the wine side: Muscadet sur lie, Anjou wines, Crémant de Loire. The local mulled wine is often made with Gamay, lighter than the classic versions. Salted-butter caramel comes in from neighbouring Brittany.
Practical tip
Nantes is 2 hours from Paris by TGV, perfect for a weekend return trip. The city is easy to explore on foot, and the Machines de l'Île pair well with the Christmas market. To go further, the château in Angers is 1 hour away by TER and worth a day. The Pays de la Loire remain little visited by Christmas tourism, which works in your favour for hotels and restaurants.
