Vannes Christmas Market

On the right bank of the harbour, the Vannes Christmas Village sets out its thirty or so chalets facing the boats, a short walk from the medieval ramparts. A Ferris wheel, local crafts and Breton treats make it one of the most pleasant events in the Gulf of Morbihan.

Vannes Christmas market has found its ideal spot: the right bank of the harbour, on the Esplanade Simone-Veil, with the moored boats as a backdrop and the medieval ramparts a short walk away. That closeness between the water, the old town and the chalets gives the Vannes village an atmosphere you will not find elsewhere in the Gulf of Morbihan. Around thirty chalets set up each year facing the water, and the edition runs for more than five weeks, plenty of time to come back several times.

Vannes Christmas market, facing the harbour

The Esplanade Simone-Veil hosts the Christmas Village on the right bank, right in the city centre. The layout makes a change from markets squeezed into a narrow street: here, you have room to move, with a view of the harbour and the comings and goings of the masts. A Ferris wheel completes the set-up and lets you gain a little height over the lights and the old town. About half the exhibitors are from Vannes, which pulls the market towards properly local crafts rather than the stalls you see everywhere.

The chalets mix food and craft: decorations, jewellery, games, handmade objects, and the seasonal treats to go with them. You snack standing up, a cup of mulled wine in hand, before wandering off towards the cathedral and the cobbled streets.

Dates, opening hours and prices

For the 2026 edition, the Christmas Village runs from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Entry to the market is free. The city-centre illuminations come on every evening from 5.30pm and stay on until late, with the Tour du Connétable lit up to extend the evening stroll. Chalet opening hours are extended during the school holidays, so aim for a weekday afternoon or early evening if you would rather avoid the weekend crowds.

Breton specialities and treats

On the food side, Brittany makes its presence felt without forcing it: kouign-amann fresh from caramelising, buckwheat galettes, local cider and hot crêpes to take away. The harbour lends itself to seafood platters for those who want something other than sweet. And as everywhere, mulled wine and tartiflette provide comfort when the wind blows in from the Gulf. Local producers run a good share of the chalets, so you often leave with honey, jams or Breton biscuits for the festive table.

Getting there and entertainment

The SNCF railway station is a quarter of an hour on foot from the harbour, which makes arriving by train very practical from Rennes or Nantes. If you are driving, the Port and République car parks are charged and close by; the Capucins and Plescop car parks offer a free option with a shuttle. As for entertainment, Father Christmas wanders the streets, the lantern walk brings families together, and there are shows, storytelling, concerts and craft workshops throughout December. If you are building a circuit in western France, the markets of Nantes, Rennes and Tours combine well with Vannes over a long weekend.

Our tip

Aim for a weekday afternoon or early evening to enjoy the illuminations at 5.30pm without the weekend crowds, then carry on through the cobbled streets of the old town up to the cathedral.
